Today's King County Journal features an article on Monte Kline, which says that the state of Washington attorney general is suing Kline for allegedly making unproven claims about a medical device. See http://www.kingcountyjournal.com/sited/story/html/144876. Kline has a doctorate from Columbia Pacific University. See http://www.pacifichealthcenter.com/general_pages/about_kline.asp. There are several statements on the Pacific Health Center website giving Kline's points of view at http://www.pacifichealthcenter.com/alerts/alertsmain.asp.

Another article about the lawsuit (in today's Seattle Times) is at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2001752531_pachealth20m.html and an older article on Kline and the Oregon AG by Stephen Barrett is at http://www.quackwatch.org/02ConsumerProtection/AG/OR/edt.html.

Washington Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Monte Kline

This 2003 article is sorely out-of-date. After a four year legal battle, the Washington Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Monte Kline, Ph.D. of Pacific Health Center and against the Washington Attorney General finding that Kline did NOT violate the state's Consumer Protection Lsw by offering Electrodermal Testing for food and nutrition balancing. The Court of Appeals ordered the State of Washington to pay Kline's attorney fees, as provided by statute, referring that exact disposition inexplicably back to King County Judge, Mary Yu, whose earlier summary judgment against Kline they just overruled. Yu arbitrarily reduced Kline's attorney fees by 50%. In total the State of Washington paid $231,000 in attorney fees to Kline, spending an estimated $1 million of taxpayer's money engaged in a malicious "consumer protection" prosecution against a practitioner for whom they had no consumer complaints and who uniquely offered a money-back Results Guarantee, unmatched by any practitioner in the state. The National Health Freedom Coalition subsequently gave their annual Health Freedom Award to Dr. Kline for prevailing against the anti-natural health care agenda of the State of Washington.

Why do you refer to yourself in the third person?

Dr. Douglas wonders why this eleven-year-old thread is being re-visited. Dr. Douglas also wonders why it took, what, 7 years to post this? Yeah, Dr. Douglas wonders about this stuff, but not too long. (Dr. Douglas doesn't really care.)

Jennifer laughs that one calls a pill "natural" and then she rolls her eyes at the gusto in which snake oil continues to be peddled, bought, and consumed.

I agree. And I might add that "snake oil" applies to many other sales such as free fireplaces for several hundred dollars and $20 worth of quarters for $25 (these examples usually sold by full page ads in newspapers).

Johann thinks Mr. Kline got off lucky. As Mr. K. claims, he beat the "Consumer Protection" part but the ruling about practicing without a license was upheld.

Appeals Court Issues Mixed Ruling in Kline Case

At an earlier point, Mr. Kline ( Johann refuses to call him Dr. Kline) was enjoined (by Oregon) from using credentials not supported by proper accreditation. So nowadays, why is he referring (above) to the Ph.D. he obtained from Columbia Pacific U. ? Oh yes - probably because he's not in Oregon. Whoopee!

Johann also considers it supremely ironic that Columbia Pacific - that ill-fated, never-accredited school ordered closed by regulators - was founded by a "real" Harvard MD. Despite that, he (Johann) would never trust his health to a CPU grad -- or take relationship advice from another (John Gray), even though Mr. Gray has, I believe, pretty well stopped referring to his Columbia Pacific um-doctorate some time ago.

Johann also joins Jennifer in the eye-rolling event.

BTW - since we seem to be at an impromptu Columbia Pacific "homecoming," I remember another CPU "Doctor" - John Gray's ex-wife, also a relationship expert, Barbara DeAngelis. Let me check... Oh yes - she and her then-husband, Mr. Gray, both got (matching?) correspondence doctorates from CPU while they were married. It's here:

Obviously, the notion of a Columbia Pacific University doctorate will cause many different reactions. Mine does not include refusing to call it's holder "doctor." Like many schools, CPU varied too widely regarding quality control, but its graduates generally did good work.

Many unaccredited schools closed when California changed its approval system. But CPU, unlike almost all of the others, already had Approved programs under the old system and it received institutional approval when the state switched to that scheme. I believe CPU could have survived; I think its founders/owners didn't have the heart to continue the fight. It's subsequent iterations as Columbia Commonwealth U. was an example of this.

If one's personal policy is to deny using that honorific to all graduates of unaccredited universities, fine. But if one's purpose is to single out CPU grads, I'd like to understand why.

Koolcypher thinks this is hilarious. With regards to the "snake oil" thing, Koolcypher agrees that there's a sucker born every minute.

Johann: "Columbia Pacific ... was founded by a 'real' Harvard MD."

John: The quotes around "real" suggests you may be questioning this. Richard Crews, whom I counted as a friend, was an Army psychiatrist for years, then in private practice, which he gave up on joining CPU, which was his full-time job for nearly 20 years. After CPU he improbably (that was his word) became a homeopathic physician--something he had sneered at most of his life. It was he who made up the wonderful line: "Did you hear about the man who forgot to take his homeopathic medicine? He died of an overdose."

No, Dr. Bear - it was just for emphasis - to differentiate it from Mr. Kline's uh-different qualification. Perhaps I should have used the word "genuine" and left off the quotes. I knew Dr. Crews was the real thing - that's why I considered his founding of the ill-fated CPU somewhat ironic. I didn't know, however, that post-CPU he became a homeopathic physician. As usual, you have an amazing store of fascinating anecdotes.

Not singling out CPU, Dr. Rich. And not all grads of unaccredited schools, either. Just singling out Mr. Kline who, although under court admonishment to use credentials only from properly-accredited schools, continued in this forum to do otherwise. I wouldn't deny the honorific to all grads of unaccredited schools -- but I'd sure as hell take a swipe (or two) at anyone trying to drum up business with such a degree -- particularly in the health business. As I see it, nobody's entitled to do that.

Now, back to eye-rolling. Not finished yet...

I thought it was Koolcypher, ThD? Koolcypher needs to give himself credit.

You are absolutely correct. Dr. Koolcypher, ThD. ought to give himself credit for his academic achievement. After all he has a doctorate degree in theology.

Dr. Koolcypher, ThD is all knowing and living the dream. We bow before you sir. :) I did not get accepted into the trucking ThD program after all. They stated to me, "I just could not live up to Koolcyper's awesomeness" and they kicked me out. Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Never give up my young Padawan. Pursuing a ThD in Jedi Apologetics is no easy task. My Master Yoda sends you a message of encouragement. "Tireman 44444, never your dream give up. If accepted not you are Phd program into, UNISA try you must."

So there you have it young Padawan, you must keep on trucking along at Unisa. :notworthy:

I guess I don't understand how his conduct eliminates the fact that he has an earned doctorate and can style himself "doctor." They don't seem related.
