Article in today's Star-Ledger, regarding the University of Phoenix seeking approval from the Commission on Higher Education of New Jersey to open a branch in Jersey City. http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/index.ssf?/base/news-10/106446919995930.xml
U. Phoenix have been trying for years. Hopefully the NJ Commission will set arrogance aside and vote for approval.
high class diploma mill "The vote, which is expected to go in Phoenix's favor, will end a five-year battle between the corporate-owned university and critics who call the school a "high class diploma mill" trying to skirt New Jersey's strict licensing laws. "

There is another thread about U. Phoenix opening a campus in Indiana. In a story linked in that thread (Private colleges expand into city), Mark Smith, VP of graduate and "adult" colleges at Indiana Wesleyan (which itself has over 7,000 "adult" students) is quoted as follows: When you bring in somebody like the University of Phoenix, with all the advertising they will do, typically all schools end up growing. It brings the adult degree programs to the forefront. I think this I correct. The presence of U. Phoenix will cause more people to think about additional education -- and some of them will be smart enough to compare the programs available. This is why I am pleased that U. Phoenix has approval to offer degrees in New Jersey -- even though I would typically not recommend U. Phoenix myself.
