    Even worse!

What is even worse is the UK Govts decision (they've just issued a consultative document) to widen the scope as to which institutions can award degrees and/or apply for 'university' title status. This will only result, in my view, in a further dilution of academic standards. Organizations that meet certain requirements can apply for taught degree awarding powers/ So, for example, BP Amoco could apply for degree awarding powres to award degrees to its employees after completing an internal BP programme of study. I guess there will have to be external assessors, possibly from universities, but I donlt believe this is the way ahead. We need more federal universities in the UK whereby other smaller colleges and institutions become affiliated with a local major regional university. This happens already and I think it makes better sense from an academic and financial view point. Thus, if a colege/institutions fails/closes its students can still be taken in by some other institution. If an institution subsequently closes the degree will still remain valid because it wil have been awarded by the 'parent' institution that will (probably) still be in existence unless the present Labour Govt makes a further mess of the system!
