Take a look at the article at: http://www.samoaobserver.ws/news/local/ln0302/1703ln001.htm How would you like to be spending $45,000/year for a medical school with 2 'professors' and read an article like this? Without WHO approval the school isn't recognized anywhere yet.
Thank you for rooting this one out. The woman behind it all, Taffy Gould, has a long string of interesting and legitimate credentials, it seems, including an honours degree from the Sorbonne. (http://medix.com.au/DOCS/gould_t.html) But there is not much reassuring about the institution itself. I wonder how much those dozen-or-so American students knew before they wrote their checks and boarded their flights for Samoa.
Dr. Bear,I ran into an article that was in the Samaon newspaper earlier this year where they were commenting the island had no antibiotics on hand to treat people with infections, etc. http://www.samoaobserver.ws/news/opinions/op0102/1101op001.htm Yet,the new 'medical school' is going to turn a bunch of 8 week wonders loose on the islanders. This school is a diploma mill...they will be turning out MD's for pay and I am certain that the WHO will certify the school, since it is politics and the graduates will try to sit for licensing and then will learn they aren't eligible. The woman who graduated from Sorbonne is a mover and shaker in the charity scene in Miami. She has a scholarship in her honor given out at Smith College which was funded by her family. Oh,the intrigue of offshore medical schools. Consumer
The Samoa Observer says: They are the university's sole lecturers when the school eight-week introductory course starts with seven undergraduate students who have already enrolled. Six are Americans and one Australian. The basic annual student fee is $A27,000 ($45,900.) It should be clarified that $A27,000 is not $45,900 American Dollars! It is, in fact, about $15,100. Since the Samoans use the Tala as their currency I have no idea what kind of dollars the article is referring to! (source: http://oanda.com )
