    Hi,

I am asking this on behalf of my nephew's girlfriend. She is 22 yo, and works full time as a CNA. Her goal is to become an LVN. She has 40 credits from Washington towards an AA in nursing.

Anyway, She tells me that you don't need an AA to become an LVN. Of course, once she becomes an LVN her goal is to earn more money and earn an AA and B.S in nursing later. She was going to do the ROP program which is the cheaper than anywhere else, however, she is on her own and has to work full time. ROP is only during the day. She can't for the life of her get into community college with class shortages, budget cuts, etc.

I am not too familiar with the nursing arena. Can anyone suggest either a partially online nursing program, with an in-person residence, or is there a somewhat affordable school that is private B&M? CNI in Santa Ana CA charges $30,000. is there anywhere cheaper? A vocational type private school is fine, this way she could go nights and weekends.

    Thanks so much in advance,

    Abner

She is correct that you don't need to get an AS - you can do the LVN and then finish the AS at a later time or not at all. I originally got my LVN, then got an AS 10 years later.

All the public California programs are impacted with either long waiting lists or lotteries.

All the community colleges are relatively cheap, although they are also during the day. They run about $30 per unit.

The private programs are all about the same $30,000.

There is a program near Travis Air Force base in Fairfield (Northern CA) that is evenings and weekends. I can't remember if it is private or public.

The first thing she needs to do is go see a community college counselor to see what will transfer to meet the CA required pre-reqs and nursing classes. Then she might be able to go in mid-program when others drop out.

Feel free to have her contact me through email if she needs any more info.

I'm not aware of any LVN/LPN programs available online.

However, WGU offers an online pre-licensure BSN with RN license and they are currently recruiting CA students. Total cost of tuition looks to be ~17k.

Thanks Tom and Denise. I wonder how long something like this would take? she is a very quick learner, can read a book and pass an exam no problem. Her mom is a nurse, so she knows many of the medical procedures already, plus she is a CNA.

$17K is damn good for for what you get. So the pre-licensure gets them to the point where they take the RN license exam?

    Thanks so much,

The WGU site states that it would take ~2 years to complete this program... The 17k figure is based upon four, 6-month terms @ $4250/term (scroll down to the "Affordable Tuition and Fees") section.

Just be careful. The Ca State LVN and RN boards are really picky about what is "approved" for practice in California. Make sure she checks their websites to find out if they have approved the school.

For example, they decided several years ago not to accept Excelsior grads even though Excelsior is approved through the National League of Nurses.

I ran this by Jessica. She said this is incredible because a similar program elsewhere runs 100,000k!

    Thanks!

Thanks so much Denise! I will have her double check everything before commiting to anything just yet.

For the short term, she still may end up having to go the quicker LVN route, then later, do something like WGU. It's up to her.

    Respectfully,

    Abner
