Hey guys, I have a friend who is wanting to open up a health food store. He's trying to get a small business loan but all he has is a hs diploma and apparently it looks better to the bank if he has some sort of diploma/certificate in the area he wants to open the business up for. He's looked at Stratford, Penn Foster and Ashworth but hasnt found anymore colleges/career schools that offer anything like this does anyone know of anywhere else he could look? Something like holistic nutrition or something?

This program looks excellent - I have been considering it for after I finish my Bachelor's. Don't know if it's what your friend is looking for.

Whole Health and Holistic Health Care Programs from NIWH

They have both on site and distance programs.

They've grown since I first discovered the program. Seems to be Nationally Accredited, (my allergies are suddenly acting up, and I'm reading through one very painful & watery eye right now, until the benydril kicks in, lol) but they state they have professional relationships with quite a few organizations. Just how that works out, I'm not sure.

But honestly, I would think he should also have some sort of business education (all the education in the world in whole health won't help him if he doesn't know how to operate a business successfully). I would start at the Small Business Association website: U.S. Small Business Administration-Your Small Business Resource

Others might have more suggestions. The paths people take to opening up this type of business are really varied. Hope the SBA is helpful, also (I've never used their services, but there seems to be lots of info on their site).

They're better already. Hate taking benydril (all I do is sleep w/that stuff), but since it felt like someone stuck an ice pick in my eye last night, I figured I needed it.

We're having some summer heat & humidity here - hoping for our ocean wind to come back & blow it all away, but no deal - it's a hot scorcher right now. Real summer (as opposed to the rainy seasons we had for the last few yrs).

Do you know which would be better between Stratford or Ashworth? Stratford offers a "career diploma" in natural health consultant and Ashworth offers a career diploma in Nutrition Diet and Health.

I'm just wondering which has the better reviews. I know that Stratford isnt accredited but I don't think you would transfer career diplomas anyway. I do wonder when your getting a small business loan if it would matter.

    I'd go with Ashworth.

Thanks Ted, I'll tell him. I think even though Stratfords is called "natural health consultant" which sounds more geared toward the health store industry. The Nutrition/Diet/Exercise is more broad a term but covers more aspects.

Does he have experience working in this area? If not it might help if he acquired a few years experience working in a related retail store.

The SBA has a training network with free courses - I do not know if they provide certificates.

He does have some retail experience but not much. He does know a ton about health/herbs/vitamins all that good stuff he's studied it for years.

He's thinking about getting a small business diploma from maybe Ashworth, unless anyone knows of another school? He likes the 29.99 payments. And then getting a certificate in herbal studies or something similar.
