    Hi All,
I am looking for a low cost MA in General Psychology. I am open for distance education / independant study but want to keep the cost to the minumum ( less than 6k). I already have a BS & Masters in Mechanical Engineering and do not seek career advancement through this degree. Its only for my personal interest.

The lowest cost degrees I could find seem to be degree mills

    Atlantic International University
    http://www.aiu.edu/Masters%20in%20Psychology.html
    Commonwealth Open University
    http://www.commopu.org/coufin.htm
    Canyon
    http://www.canyoncollege.edu/b~psychology.htm
    New Port University
    http://www.newport.edu/prog_h_psy.html

Do you have any better suggestions?

    Regards,
    Mallik.

Sorry to disappoint, but you've picked 3 diploma mills and one unaccredited California school.

Canyon is operated out of somebody's house in Carmichael, CA.

AIU is in Hawaii (for years a home to unwonderful schools) and has a longwinded description of why accreditation isn't important.

Commonwealth Open? You've got to be kidding. Full of apologia that basically admits it isn't a legitmate school.

And Newport, while legally operating, is nothing to write home about.

If you want the *education*, then all you need to do is buy yourself a set of textbooks and start reading. Quite a number of top-rate schools list the syllabi for their courses online so you can have the same curriculum as a quality, regionally accredited school.

If it's the degree you're after, then I would suggest checking out Charter Oak State College, THomas Edison State College, or Excelsior College. All will allow you to do a combination of exams and portfolio credits to earn a legitimate, regionally accredited degree with a psychology concentration, and at probably close to or under your target cost.

But getting a degree from any of the schools above will almost certainly be inferior to self education with a good reading list, and the degree itself from any of those schools will be of very limited or no utility at all.

If you're looking for a low cost option for personal fulfillment only WNMU has a master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. They offer a variety of 18 credit concentrations including psychology. The grad credits are $172 per credit which would put you about at the $6k budget you mentioned.

Surprisingly, there aren't a lot of inexpensive DL regionally-accredited masters degrees in psychology.

OK - The schools you picked were all unaccredited. And I'd recommend an accredited degree if available, even if it's only for personal fulfillment. When I saw this thread on master's degrees, I thought to myself, "Damn! I've been thinking about doing one of my detailed state-by-state lists with school name, website, degree titles/majors/concentrations, hourly tuition, hours in degree, total program tuition, and accreditations for psych degrees (you know, similar to my MED, EDD, MBA, and DBA Stickys )!" Maybe I'll use this thread for that, maybe another thread. But, in the meantime, I'll go look up other old psych threads because I know I've answered a request for a list of schools with master's degrees in psychology with a simpler school names and websites.

EDIT: If DETC is okay with you, California Coast University www.calcoast.edu offers an MS in Psychology and Atlantic University www.atlanticuniv.edu offers an MA in Transpersonal Studies. DETC is usually pretty inexpensive, hovering around about $250 an hour.

EDIT 1: American Pacific University www.ampac.edu is a newly DETC school based in Hawaii that offers an MA in Transpersonal Psychology.
EDIT 2: On those old threads, here http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30460 is that thread on PhDs in Psychology. There is a thread entitled "BA or Master's in Psychology" that I bumpity-ed for you (perhaps someone can put up the thread number for me). Here http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28847 is a thread on MAs in Psychology that I was hoping to bumpity and make into the MA in Psychology Sticky. The same thread-starter also has a thread on PhDs in Psychology (though I am too blind to be able to read the thread number without my glasses). Here http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31997 is a thread on unaccredited PsyDs, which are valid credential for sitting for the state licensure exam in California. Wow, this is a great find, thanks! I was aware of NMSU's other online programs, but this one escaped my attention, until now.

Look at this, we have multiple references to pop culture spanning decades. One is the reference to an old TV program Kung Fu and the other to an urban slang that "...has no single meaning, but is used to convey a casual sense of affirmation, acknowledgement, agreement, or to indicate that something has impressed you favorably" (Copied from the Urban Dictionary).

    Well played. :) ;)
