    Hey everyone-

First off let me say this is a wonderful site! I am currently in an online graduate program for Counseling Psychology (M.A) and I am looking into getting my Doctorate online as well. I would like to go into Counseling or a similar area. I have looked into Argosy...any opinions on that school for DL or any other suggestions would be much appreciated.:p

Are you interested in getting licensed?

Here are a few schools that offer counseling or psychology doctorates online:

    - Capella University : http://www.capella.edu/schools_programs/degrees/phd.aspx

    - Northcentral University : http://www.ncu.edu/academics/graduate/psychology_phd.aspx

    - Walden University : http://www.waldenu.edu/c/Schools/Schools_110.htm

    - Fielding Graduate University : http://www.fielding.edu/psy/

    Licensure

My M.A. in Counseling Psych. will provide me with the necessary credits I need for licensure in Mental Health Counseling. I am not looking to get licensed as a psychologist, but I would like to become the one of many online adjuncts/faculty. Many counseling/psychology programs require the Doctorate. Anyone have any opinions on Argosy...seems like a good school and program overall. Also what about NCU...I see it is accredited, but they do not provide financial aid(loans)? Thanks!

Jacquie, have you researched colleges that hire psychology adjuncts who are masters degreed. For example, Florida Community College is looking for adjuncts to teach psychology courses online. You only need 18 psychology credits. This will help you fund your prospective argosy doctoral program that will open more doors.

    Thank you

Thank you for the great information. Now this says online that you need online teaching experience, so I would have to first land a job elsewhere and get experience I guess?

    Hi,

I was an online DBA student at Argosy, my experience was not very good and many others share same view as I do. You can read other people's comments about the school here. But remember if you decided to go the Argosy route ask lot of questions and be prepared to pay a small fortune (45K to 75K if not more) , it will be your decision. Best of luck!

    Hopes it helps,

    Vini

    But wait, there's more!

Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center offers a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, new and intending to seek APA accreditation, thus including a one-year internship. Saybrook also offers their longstanding Ph.D.s in Psychology, Human Science, or Organizational Systems. All are hybrid distance and short residency. Saybrook is strongly connected to the humanistic, existential, phenomenological and transpersonal movements or domains in psychology.

The Union Institute & University offers a short residency Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, also new and intending to seek APA accreditation. For interdisciplinary studies related to psychology for the student not seeking licensure, the Union Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies could also be an option.

The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology offers a Ph.D. in Psychology online with residential seminars. Its content "focuses on the research, evaluation, and application of transpersonal principles, (such as mindfulness, discernment, compassion, and appreciation of differences) in four major areas: individuals, small groups, organizations, and global community."

Regent University offers the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision online, with three ten-day residencies. It is the first online doctoral program accredited by CACREP. Regent University was founded and is led by Pat Robertson, and seeks to integrate its Christian perspective into all of its programs.

Amridge University offers the Ph.D. in Professional Counseling or in Marriage and Family Therapy online, with "a combination of face-to-face residency and live web residency. Normally, students will be on campus for one week each year in each of the first three fall semesters. During this week of on campus time, the student will be participating in two designated courses through face to face residency. During the rest of the semester the student will participate in the two courses through weekly, live web residency/class participation." Amridge University, formerly Southern Christian University and then Regions University until settling a trademark dilution suit from Regions Bank, is affiliated with the Churches of Christ, but "Those of various religious backgrounds are welcome to take advantage of Amridge University’s curricular offerings," and in a survey, only 41% of students indicated they were affiliated with the Churches of Christ.

Willing to spend a year in Fresno or Sacramento? The California School of Professional Psychology Fresno/Sacramento campus pair of Alliant International University has a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, new and intending to seek APA accreditation. The Advanced Standing Online Option allows master's-trained mental health professionals to study one year online, one on the ground in Fresno or Sacramento, then one in internship.

All the above are regionally accredited.

There's a wealth of knowledge on this board and others about "research doctorates," doctorates from established, bricks-and-mortar universities in parts of the world, commonly the U.K., Australia and South Africa, where the doctoral work product may consist of one piece, a comprehensive dissertation, and this may be pursued at a distance from campus.

Education is a closely related area with quite a few doctorates by distance learning, including K-12, higher, and sometimes adult, and you can think of different ways to incorporate counseling and psychology in each of those contexts. The next closest area with a big cluster of distance learning doctoral activity is probably broadly, management and administration with a soft-skill take, under titles like organizational management, leadership, and human resource management. Also related, health administration and health studies.

    Good luck! Keep us posted.

Although I did not study counseling or psychology, I did graduate from Argosy University (Orange County campus) with a DBA in Management. I attended classes in residence and only took a couple of courses on-line. My Argosy DBA has served me well and helped me get a full-time position in an MBA program at an AACSB accredited school. I do know Argosy is much stronger in psychology than in business administration, with some campuses being APA accredited. I also know that Argosy is a candidate for ACBSP accreditation. Many people start their studies at Argosy, but many people do not complete their studies. It’s not an easy program, but then again, doctoral studies are not supposed to be easy.

Sorry but I disagree, I had all A in my studies so for me the accounting program was very, very, very, easy. I transfer out to NCU so I am still going.

I found Argosy program not to be in level to my financial needs and educational interest at least the online one, since I did not have the opportunity to test the ground ones since they did not have reciprocity with each other.

NCU online is ACBSP accredited and the curriculum is much better that the one from Argosy online (I can only speak about the accounting program). But every university serves certain population and purpose and what is for you may not be form me and vice versa.

At Fielding Graduate University, besides the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology raristud2 links above, you might want to look at the Ph.D. in Media Psychology and at the Ph.D. in Human Development or in Human & Organizational Development. Fielding's Clinical Psychology program is so far the only distance learning doctorate in psychology, be it clinical, counseling, school or a combination, accredited by the APA, a very good thing, but the APA model, as with the other programs above that are trying for APA, means a one year internship requirement is built in, which since you're a practicing provider already and not interested in psychology licensure, might present a hinderance.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but in the interests of fairness it should be noted that anyone with an Internet connection and a grudge can access that site and post either positive or negative reviews....even several under different names. I don't put much stock in anonymous reviews, myself.

I agree. Same thing goes for everything in life, buying a house, a car, investing, etc.... So for that reason I had to see for my self (like most people do) and what happen was that most things said about Argosy are true and I did not wanted to believed it, but reality did set in before going deep in the pile. I experience first hand what they are and what they do, if was a hefty price to pay to find out, but it is all good, I am still going. :D

    Union Institute

Union Institute seems to have a well organized program and the Family Psych. is what I have been looking for-anyone have any ideas about their residencies and where/when they are held? Thanks!

Their residencies are held in Brattleboro, Vermont and Cincinnati, Ohio. They used to require only about 35 days residency for their doctoral programs. Hopefully, someone else can chime in on whether that still stands.

    Do your own research

I am a current student at Argosy's Atlanta campus in the DBA program and I have had a wonderful experience at the university thus far. I have 3 classes left before I go into my comps. People have there own reasons for approving of disapproving of Argosy University, however, one person experience in not the same as the next person. If you have a will to learn, then you can succeed in any task placed before you.

Vinipink and others like him/her had a bad experience, but don't let anyone speak for you, when people have bad experience, they want to speak for the masses. I can tell you that has not been the case for me, and it is not going to be a cake walk, you have will to do the work. Nevertheless, do your research and make your own decision.

So, you never had a bad experience with Argosy? I find that hard to believe.
