    Hello Everyone.

I have searched the archives of this discussion forum and have not found anything about the Medical College of Wisconsin's M.A. in Bioethics http://www.mcw.edu/bioethics/exec_ma.html

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who is familiar with this program.

    Hi,

I am not familiar with this particular program, however I have researched the MA in Bioethics program offered by Loyola University - Chicago. This program (unlike the one above) is available 100% online (although there is an optional, intensive summer session).

Also, if you do not have a professional degree (i.e. M.D., D.O., D.V.M., etc..), you may complete the 4-course Bioethics certificate program first and then transfer 3 of those 4 courses into the MA program. The MA program is 30 credits (10 courses) and may be completed in two years. No thesis is required, however as part of the capstone seminar, "students are required to prepare a paper of publishable quality."

Loyola Univ. - Certificate in Bioethics:

    Good luck!

Since no one else has responded by being in the program, I will comment just from my perusing the website.

It looks to be a really good program. I have heard of some of the faculty just from my reading in the ethics field and having done a seminar or two in ethics in my PHD program. The courses seem to cover a good breadth of bioethics and, with a thesis, I think it would be a good program to go on to further graduate school.

It seemed to be a bit pricy, though not bad. Other universities, such as Wales Lampeter, might offer a fully distance program (in medical ethics) that might be a little cheaper, though not much.

    My two cents...

Thank you for the feedback. I too had investigated Loyola and though I enjoyed a rewarding secondary school experience at an all girls Catholic boarding school, I am not a Christian and do not wish to study bioethics from the Christian perspective. Loyola's mission statement contends that they are, "...A diverse community seeking God in all things…" and they proclaim that one of the five characteristics of a Jesuit education is, "Faith in God and the religious experience: Promoting well-formed and strongly held beliefs in one's faith tradition to deepen others' relationships with God." I suspect that my disbelief in God and in the sanctity of all human life as a gift from God would make me an unsuitable candidate for their educational offerings.

    Hi,

As an Aetheist, I can certainly understand your trepidations regarding this school. However, many catholic institutions downplay the religious dogma somewhat at the graduate level. In reviewing the course descriptions for the MA in Bioethics, I do not see any mention of ethics from a theological perspective (with the exception of the course titled "Religion & Bioethics"). Even this course will "examine the role of medicine and ethics in other faith traditions (Protestantism, Judaism, Islam)."

Anyway, if this is a big concern for you, just contact the school and ask them what role (if any) religion plays in this program.

Also, take a look at the MA Ethics program at the University of Wales - Lampeter. PMBrooks already mentioned it once in this thread, but it deserves mentioning again.

    Good luck!
    - Tom
