Greetings. I am a new member to this forum and would like to pick your brains for some advice. I would like to apply for a guidance counselor position and the requirements are:

"A master’s degree in educational guidance and counseling, or a master’s degree with a minimum of 30 SH of graduate course work well distributed over the areas of guidance and counseling with practical application to programs and practices in a PreK-12 school setting. Additionally, a practicum in PreK-12 school guidance and counseling is required."

There is also a note that says: "A valid state or territory certificate/license may be accepted in lieu of meeting the minimum qualification requirements when issued a 2-year Provisional License."

I was wondering if anyone knows of a 100% online course (I live in Korea) that will fulfill these requirements. Of course, the practicum would have to be done here but I wouldn't be able to attend classes. I like the U of Alabama West program unitl I saw "students must hold or be eligible for the Alabama Class B Certificate." as a requirement to get in.

Naturally, cost is a factor but any advice/information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you scroll down the threads you'll see one entitled "Psych Masters read this" It's currently living on page 3. The last posting to the thread was 03/07/05. You might want to check it out. It relates to a pilot program offered at Walden. Otherwise check out the program offered at Southern Christian University. The information I have is that it's a no-residency program.

I believe the University of West Alabama has exactly the program you are looking for. I recommend it very highly.

Howard, are you a student in the Counseling/Psychology master's program at UWA? I have been considering this program over a general psychology master's program at either Northcentral or Capella. I'd be very interested in finding out more from a current student: how many hours required per week, do they have discussion boards and posting requirements, papers, proctored exams, etc. Thanks!

    how it works

I have had two classes at UWA. "Systems of Psychotherapy" and "Health Psychology". I did short paper, a research paper, a critique and response each week for both classes. My professor was Dr. Bob Ware and he was very good. You will get whatever you put into such classes. If one wishes to do a "first-class" paper and learn as much as you can, you will. If one wishes to do a half a&% job, one will learn very little.
Like any graduate program, they don't hold your hand.
All this, plus, full financial aid like an honest to goodness college, and full semester credits on a quarter system. I recommend the program highly. I will be returning to it in fall 06.
    Good luck to you.

    Steve,
What Dan B said. I have had both courses that Dan spoke of and had the same experience he had. I also have studied at Liberty and Capella but believe that what I received at UWA was superior. If you want to email me [email protected].

In actual practice, this means that you must have a teaching credential from some state. When I was in the program, my California teaching credential sufficed.
