I am interested in receiving some sort of distance learning training in the field of Christian Counseling. I've been a full-time Pulpit Minister for about 13 years, but I've never really gotten any concentrated training in this area. I'm not interested in getting a degree necessarily, just the practical DL training that I can implement in my ministry.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

    God bless!

If no degree is being pursued let me strongly recommend EMERGE Ministries.

Courses via their Institute of Pastoral Counseling are $34.95 per lesson and are excellent. If one pastors a church with fewer than 100 members, the cost is only $29 per lesson.

If you decide while in the program you want a degree, EMERGE has a program in conjunction with Ashland Theological Seminary for an MA in either pastoral counseling or clinical pastoral counseling.

Other degree programs, if you want a degree, would include Liberty and some unaccredited schools if accreditation is not an option. Bethany of Dothan, AL comes to mind.

    Best of luck.

Thanks, Jimmy. I checked out EMERGE'S web-site -- it looks like an impressive program. The cost is certainly reasonable.

You mentioned Bethany of Dothan. I notice you received a couple of degrees from there. Were they in counseling? If so, were the courses helpful to you in a practical way in your ministry? How would they compare to say, EMERGE'S program?

A friend of mine mentioned to me that the American Association of Christian Counselors has some distance learning video training classes. From looking at their web-site, they seem to be fairly expensive. Are you (or is anyone else) familiar with these courses?

    Thanks again!

    Hi mhl,

I think for a non degree program, EMERGE is perhaps your best choice. I am not familiar with the ACA program but heard it is excellent, although as you say, expensive.

Bethany's program benefitted me. My Th.M. was in biblical counseling and my Ph.D. was in pastoral counseling. The PhD allowed me to sit for and pass a national certification/licensure exam which in turn qualified me for state licensure as a clinical professional counselor in one state and mental health counselor in another.

Bethany's programs are good if accreditation is not a career or denominational issue.
