I am a Canadian seeking more information about obtaining an MA through distance. I will be finished my BA in Psychology in two years, and currently only have a 3.1 GPA, which is generally not good enough for SFU or UBC in Vancouver (my first choices). I am also investigating Western Washington U which is also within driving distance.

If anyone could give me more information it would be appreciated. I do not know much about distance education, but it must, must, MUST be accredited and recognized in British Columbia. Thanks.

Since we would seem to have a bit of time before you actually need to apply, I'll ask a clarifying question. Are you seeking a degree that would allow you to work as a therapist or are you interested in some other branch of Psychology?

I am interested in social and developmental psychology, possibly working as a child psychologist.

While I will not pretend to know the standards used across the 50 US states I will say that I do not believe that obtaining a Masters degree in Social Psychology or Developmental Psychology will allow you to work as a Child Psychologist (Therapist) anywhere in the US. My best advice is that you first speak with the faculty members of your current Psychology Dept. about these distinctions. There are graduate programs that can get you where you want to go but you need to learn more about the basic divisions within the field of Psychology, internships, state licensure laws, etc. It's a complicated subject but don't get discouraged, it's all do-able.

Yes I know that, but from what I've read, I need a MA before I can move onto the PhD. At least that's what I've been told by my professors.

Yes, well having a Masters will make it easier as will having some actual experience. Admission to these Doctoral programs is competitive and so any advantage you can gain will hold you in good stead. For that reason I'd suggest you consider a Masters in something like Counseling. It will allow you to work in the field a bit and thereby make you a more attractive candidate for a slot in a PhD program. Also, it will help you to confirm that the Counseling field is for you.
I think Athabasca has a program. You could also check out Antioch, California Institute of Integral Psychology, Prescott College, Liberty U, Southern Christian U and Argosy.
    Good luck.

Any cheap programs that are accredited, all D/L, and flexible start times? I'd have to pay for this out of my own pocket, so the cheaper, the better.

Sorry, those sorts of details fall under the category of "Your First Homework Assignment."
    Good luck,

I notice your writing style is brash, so I will forgive you.

I've been searching for months already, and I'm VERY GOOD at finding what I want.

I am to assume what I want doesn't exist for under $1500/ course.

If I'm wrong, you can apologize for assuming I'm an idiot by posting a link.

Jack may be a little direct, but I wouldn't call him brash. First, the Ph.D. programs I have looked at accept mostly students BAs not MAs. So you may want to reevaluate your direction. If you want a low cost MA in Psychology I would look at East Carolina University. If Counseling would work, you may consider Liberty University. For more suggestions do a search. This topic has been discussed for several years here. There is a wealth of info in the archived posts. Good luck!

    Thank you!

Liberty looks about right if I go the Psychology/Counseling route.

Ooops. Liberty's site says my state, Illinois, does not accept distance learning for psychology licensing.

    Sigh.

I don't much mind being called brash and while we're on the subject, I don't believe I've done anything that requires forgiveness. Rather, what I've done is take some of my time to answer psychq's question. If I knew the answer to your question then I'd have given that as well. Since I didn't know the answer I simply suggested that you plow through the websites and pull the data yourself. Also, I didn't assume that you were an idiot but I'm an open-minded guy and am willing to change my opinion as new information is provided. Best of luck in your search.

    my find

In my quest to weed through a multitude of websites here is one I found that is rather inexpensive...

Good Luck. I know how frustrating this can be. I am looking for a dl masters psych program as well. I am appplying to Argosy's PsyD Clinical Psych program...cross your fingers and toes!

    Hi,

That West Alabama/Columbia school looks quite good. I'm still a bit confused though to distance learning.

    1. I am Canadian. Will my tuition fees be much higher, or just at exchange rate? At my current school, international students pay $1200 per course compared to $369 (public university).

    2. Is this credible for entering UBC or SFU PhD programs?

    Re: my find

The thing I hate about the UWA degree is that it is a MS in Continuing Education in Counseling Psychology! I can't believe they do that. Now if it was simply Counseling Psychology it would market much more effectively.

No fee change that I am aware of. It is cheap for in-state students and expensive for out of state students. Sorry if my prior message wasn't clear.
