Sorry if this has already been posted; I didn't see a thread on it after a quick search of the message board.

Notice to sailors, University of Phoenix on Probation effective 10/7/2015

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Attention Sailors,

Effective 10/7/2015, the University of Phoenix, OPE ID 02098800, has been placed on a probationary
status with their DoD Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (DoD MOU) agreement.

At this time University of Phoenix's accreditation remains unchanged. Additionally, there has been no
change to their Title IV status with the Department of Education nor their GI Bill benefits status with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The DoD Instruction 1322.25, DoD MOU, and current school status can be found at http://dodmou.com/Home/InstitutionList.

    Existing Students

While in a probationary status, the University of Phoenix will be permitted to "teach-out." This means
that current Sailors attending University of Phoenix and receiving DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) will be
permitted to complete courses already in progress. Current students will also be permitted to enroll in
new courses and use military TA.

    New Students

While in a probationary status NO NEW OR TRANSFER STUDENTS will be permitted to receive DoD
Tuition Assistance at the University of Phoenix. Further, University of Phoenix access to DoD
installations will be limited. If you choose to attend University of Phoenix, you may be eligible to use
your GI Bill to fund the courses or you may seek other funding sources (Scholarships, Grants, out-of pocket).
At this time, military TA will not be authorized.

    Advice

If you are an existing student (enrolled in courses that started prior to 7 Oct 2015), you may choose to
continue attending University of Phoenix and use military TA. If you have questions or concerns, contact
your Navy College Office or the Virtual Education Center (VEC) (VEC contact below).

If you are a new student, you have two options:

    1. Attend University of Phoenix and use other funding (GI Bill, Scholarships, Grants, out-of-pocket).

    2. Contact a Navy College or VEC Counselor to explore other school programs.

I can't say that I'm shocked, UoP has been tap-dancing in a minefield for quite awhile.

This has been a disaster waiting to happen for many years.

Yeah, this has been brewing for a while. But, in the end, so what?

As the notice says you can still use GI Bill (which is available to service members while serving on AD, at least it was when I was on AD). And people will. People will continue to chase those red socks (no, not those red socks) as long as they can end their research early by clicking on a spiffy website banner. I hope that many sailors do consult a counselor and see that there are cheaper and more reputable options out there. For those that don't, you're still talking about an RA diploma. For the sailor 12 credits shy of a B.S. who is hoping to get into OCS (and for some reason didn't apply for STA-21) finishing out might be the best option.

When someone wants to vilify the fast food industry, they evoke McDonald's. I'm sure Burger King has enjoyed this circumstance for decades.

APUS and others, I'm sure, are glad for UoP taking a bullet for them here and there.

For profit education needs to more relevant and should offer more value like McDonald and Burger King. The fast food industry is constantly innovating and adaption. In most cases fast food is value for money. For profit education has not been that great lately.

APUS offers a pretty good value. The American College of Education offers a pretty good value for education masters degrees. A Patten MBA is potentially significantly less than a WGU MBA. There are a lot of new idea emerging in higher Ed and many of them originate with for-profit schools. NAU and SNHU are basically copying the work of for-profits but then adding "Oh, and we're non-profit!" To their promotional literature.
