Post 9/11 GI Bill or MGIB for distance education?

I'm currently set to start classes with Regis University in the summer, and I am deciding on which veteran's educational benefit program to use.

I'm active duty military, so I already get the monthly housing allowance. Would it make more sense to use the MGIB in this case? Or just stick with the Post 9/11?

It depends how many credit you're taking, also at what level. Regis University charges $250.00 per credit for active duty. However, only 15% off or MBA and 10% for other Master degrees.

If you're taking only 2 classes (6 credits) per term. Then I would recommend you to use all you tuition assistance first, then pay some out of your pocket. Because you might need to use the GI Bill for further education later on.

But in this case, you wan to use the GI Bill...I would recommend MGIB over Post 9/11 because you don't get housing allowance.

I plan on taking three courses at a time, two if it gets to be a bit much.

I also read somewhere (I think) that if you use all of your MGIB, and you can apply to have an additional 12 months of benefits under the 9/11 GI Bill. Is that the case?

Yes, that's exactly what I did. As soon as I exhausted my MGIB benefits, I applied for the Post 9/11 GI bill and qualified for the 12 months.

Just curious, since you're active duty, is TA an option? I paid for most of my BS with TA while on active duty.

Awesome. I think that's what I'll do then.

TA would be an option, but it doesn't cover nearly as much as I would like. It's only worth 5 classes, and I'd use it up in about half a year.

Don't forget CLEP's and DANTES test. Might want to check the transfer policy out. Maybe you could take a few classes at a cheaper school and transfer them in.

Use your TA up at the start of each fiscal year, then use your GI Bill to pay for the rest of the year.

I am second to that...the exams are FREE for all active members, whether pass/fail.

I used most of my TA already for this year with AMU. I decided to switch programs. I have most of my gen-ed already knocked out, save for an english class or two, so CLEP or DANTES exams wouldn't help too much.

A class or two that you can CLEP out of is still a class you do not have to take/pay for. (Or have money taken out of your GI Bill for it)
