We've had threads here and there for people to introduce themselves, but we've never officially established a place where people, particularly new members, could introduce themselves to the community.

Of course, many people choose to do so when posting for the first time with a distance learning question, and that's perfectly fine to continue, but I figured having a forum specifically for introductions might provide an opportunity for people with common or similar interests to get to know one another.

New members and those who have "lurked" for a long time are particularly welcomed to post here :)

  2. looking for info for accreditation standards

Thanks, Chip - I'm a new user, interested in finding out how various distance programs meet accreditation standards, especially in terms of measuring how much study/work is done toward a particular course or degree (i.e. process-based rather than exclusively outcomes-based measurements). I work for the Accrediting Council for Theological Education in Africa (ACTEA), and live in Nairobi. ACTEA is currently revising our standards to reflect the growth in modular, part-time and distance programs across Africa. We're looking for simple, fairly low-cost and low-tech ways to achieve some sort of standardization and parity among programs. Anybody have suggestions? Thanks!

Hey, Stephanieblack...I registered tonight and am really not sure how to get around this site...but anyways, I saw something you had posted and I saw that you live in Nairobi Kenya and I was like "hey! I'm from there!" did you once go to a conference in Kurungu? If you didn't then you'll think I'm some crazy person talking about strange places... but anyways, I used to live in Northern Kenya just a couple months ago, we came back this year. I'm Alysia Middleton by the way.... Hi :) So if you don't know me you don't have to respond because it is sorta weird... but do you remember me?

Hello to both Stephanie and Alysia! Thanks for joining us. I think that Stephanie knows that she's asked a very big question. I think that there are some people on this board who might be of some assistance in such a project. I'd like to invite Stephanie to start a separate thread on the Distance Learning forum. Perhaps you could provide a few more details. I'm sure that whatever system goes into place must mesh with the overall political system of the country and I'm guessing that most of us aren't as familiar with that as we might be (it's certainly true for me). I'd love to think that we might contribute.

The following accreditation standards are US based and are known as national accreditors. Both the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) focus on accrediting private colleges or universities, technical or trade schools. The difference is that DETC is primarily focused on accrediting schools that offer programs strictly through distance education. Since you are interested in distance learning, the DETC accreditation handbook may be a good place to start.

The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS) is faith-related national accreditor that accredits schools at the graduate
level ( masters and doctorate ). Schools accredited by ATS may also offer distance education courses. There are other faith-related accreditors recognized by chea and the US department of education.

    National Accreditation

    -------------------------------------------------------

    Regional Accreditation

A basic difference between regional accreditation and national accreditation is the geographical area of focus. Each regional accreditor is tasked with accrediting a specific region of the US while national accreditation is not boundary specific. Also, regional accreditation is viewed as more prestigious in the United States. Below you will find links to regional and national accreditors.

There is also programmatic accreditation. Each programmatic accreditor may focus on one or more career fields. You will find a listing of programmatic accreditors in the pdf link above.

    Welcome to degreeinfo.

New to online teaching and distance learning

    Hi,

I just joined this forum about fifteen minutes ago, so obviously there is a lot of catching up to do.

I'd like to start by telling you a little about myself and my institution. I am the founder and CEO of Kush University Online, which is primarily an institution that teaches African languages. All we have at this point, in terms of legitimacy, is our incorporation documents from the Secretary of State of Illinois. We want more, and this is where we are starting to learn more about becoming a legitimate, degree-granting institution recognized for excellence in education. We desperately want accreditation. Will someone here point us in the right direction? Thanks!

    Hi all,
I found this forum over a year ago and tried to register but something didn't work right. I work with students who are often looking for alternative ways to complete degree requirements. This forum has provided some wonderful assistance in locating distance education courses.

Hi lucioroma - welcome to degreeinfo. if you have any questions about how things work you can ask anyone, either on the open forum or by personal messaging (pm). as for the smilies, don't fret over them. they haven't worked for a while. i think there's a frozen widget in the framus. I'm out of WD-40 and my propane torch is empty so I can't fix it. ;)

  17. Hello everyone!

I'm new to this site. ;)
    A little about myself..
I am Australian, and I will move to Seoul (South Korea) December 3rd 2009.
I plan to obtain a degree which will enable me to teach English in Korean schools.

After searching the internet, I found that to teach English legally in South Korea, A native English speaker must obtain a BA in their home country (one of 7 English speaking countries). Korea does not recognise their own BA's obtained by a foreigner for teaching purposes.

I really wonder why that is; I don't understand.

Anyway now I have to find another way to obtain a degree to be able to teach English, while living in Korea. I'm still researching but, I think maybe I can enroll to an Australian online university, and begin & complete it while in Korea.

Thanks for reading, and any help would be appreciated. :)

New user interested in international studies

    Hi all

I'm interested in reading Economics and Politics. I'm probably looking to move towards International Relations, with International Development also being a possibility.

Apart from Politics and Economics, I'm interested in learning or improving my ability in languages: French, German, Greek, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish.

I also have an interest in Sociology and Psychology, and to improve my employability/broaden my scope, I may look to studying Marketing further.

This is my first attempt at distance learning and I'm looking to enrol with UNISA. I'm a past student at UPE, now NMMU, although I never completed my degree studies in B.Com Accounting & Business Management.

As I have far-flung family to catch up with, I may be writing exams in South Africa, Canada, Greece, and, possibly, Brazil.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Theo K
