Ok, so Ted inspired me (What are you reading?) to ask What are you watching? If you're at all edu-nerdy or interested in social sciences, especially social psychology, I have to suggest checking out (Dis)honesty The Truth About Lies I watched it on Netflix today- wow! And for a series, I just finished Rosemary and Thyme. Likely won't appeal to most of the guys here, but it's a bit of a cross between Murder She Wrote and Matlock with fantastic English gardens to die for (literally)
Favorite series of the last ten years: Borgen. Danish, non-violent, terrific. Murdoch Mysteries. Warehjouse 13. Fringe. Rizzoli & Isles. Endeavour White Knight.
Once Fringe got up to speed it was amazing. John Noble was robbed for never getting an Emmy. We've been catching up on Tyrant, but now Orange Is the New Black has new episodes, so we're kind of going back and forth. (BTW, for purposes of this thread I'll treat Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu as interchangeable.)
Glad to hear from a Murdoch Mysteries fan. My personal favourite. Canadian, too. Montreal-born actor Yannick Bisson stars as Det. William Murdoch, of the Toronto Constabulary, ca. 1900. U.S. TV watchers may have seen him some years back as Agent Jack Hudson on "Sue Thomas, F.B. Eye." He's here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yannick_Bisson Borgen's great - about my third favourite. Second is a Brit. series, "New Tricks" - about old, cranky retired British cops, returning to work as a cold-case squad. Not watching anything on Netflix though. Have a computer at home but no Internet there. Might have, soon. Not a money-issue. Have over-the-air TV only. It's free and it's enough. J.
Just power-watched a good portion of The Family on Hulu. OMG that's a twisted show- but I'm totally hooked.
Netflix has 2 options, you can pay $9/month for streaming or you can upgrade and get DVDs mailed to your house. I haven't been a DVD subscriber in years, but we've really enjoyed the streaming plan. We use Hulu which is free, however, they've added an option for commercial free, which I think is also about $10/month. Just go to netflix dot com. *NOTE* not all of the DVD movies are on their streaming and vice-versa, but there is a large selection. I almost never get through their entire documentary list (almost never).
For Hulu..at least us... $7.95 (USD) for all shows they offer with commercials $11.95 (USD) for all show they offer without commercials We chose the latter...
Ted, If you have a newer TV with a USB port you can buy Chromecast and subscribe to Netflix that way. Or, you can hook your computer up to your TV and stream Netflix that way as well. Someone in your circle (friends or families) can probably hook you up with their subscription (you're allowed to have multiple profiles). It's a good bargain and there are lots of good movies and shows on there. I've watched a lot of documentaries on there as well. Me and my oldest have been watching WWII in Color. Great series.
I haven't had great luck with Chromecast, actually. I would buy a Roku, either the Streaking Stick (if your TV has an HDMI port) or a Roku 1 (if it doesn't). Fifty bucks, and you can access Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Now, and many, many more services you've never heard of from the same interface. https://www.roku.com/products/compare
Just watched Money for Nothing: Inside the Federal Reserve Focused on the 2008 financial meltdown- very balanced imo. As I watched, I noticed the amazing parallel to the student loan debt crisis (bubble) happening now.
Then here's another new-ish one you might like, John: Follow The Money. Danish again - moves fast. Three more things I like about both Danish shows - (a) Both are shown without intervening commercials, on my free over-the-air TV (b) Danish sounds very nice, to my ear. I'm trying to absorb some. Not that easy. Sure it has Germanic roots, but it seems pretty darn far from German, to me. (c) Danish actresses J.
Including Natalie Madueño - yes, she was born in Copenhagen - who plays Claudia Moreno, a staff lawyer at Energreen. Nordic Noir | TV and Film from Scandinavia and beyond J. PS. The Danish series title is Bedrag - meaning deception.
The wife and I recently watched "The Barkley Marathons". It is about an extremely difficult ultramarathon held annually in Tennessee. It is good to watch if you are an endurance athlete or just like to watch people suffer. Barkley Marathons Documentary – The Race That Eats Its Young
YES! I saw it- staggering. I know 1 person in real life who *might be up to the challenge, it's not for the weak of mind, body, or spirit - and you have to be a nerd to appreciate the event. Great doc! Edit- if we could rustle up Team Degree Info I'll spring for t-shirts and cookies. Mind you, I'll be sitting at the gate, but I'm a great cheerleader!
