A post grad diploma in management? Welingkar: Distance Learning Program Offers Management Learning through Movie Sessions It looks like a private company - no accreditation, etc. Does this have value or is it just a scam? Welingkar Institute Of Management.
No degrees, which is nice. The value of the certificate (as opposed to the learning that went into earning it) will be based mostly on the people who conduct your program. For example, one of the international faculty listed is William Rothwell, a big deal in Human Resource Development. If you're in that field and you study with him, that would be a good thing.
Then how come I just clicked on their button: "Part Time Master's degrees?" They offer 4 of them... http://www.welingkar.org/welingkar/v1/Programmes/PartTimeCourseThreeYear.asp?br=1§ion=Programs Johann
The headline on that page says: The University of Mumbai has a page listing "University Affiliated Colleges". If you click on the "College of Management Studies" link, it brings up a long list of schools, including Welingkar Institute at #46. So Welingkar's degree programs appear to be affiliated in some way with the legitimate University of Mumbai. Possibly Welingkar degrees are validated by University of Mumbai, in the same way that the University of Wales used to validate external degrees.
That page makes it look like the degrees are awarded by "Mumbai University", and if that's the same thing as the University of Mumbai, then that's legitimate. Also, their Wikipedia entry says they're accredited by DEC. A closer look is warranted before reaching a verdict.
Probably because it's there. That's too bad, unless those degrees are awarded by other, recognized schools.
if you press the "programs" button on the front page, you get access to Master's and Ph.D. programs - here: Welingkar Institute Of Management. You just missed it, in your extremely cursory "no degrees - nice" review - and don't want to admit it. But that's OK. As for the validity of these degrees - yes, the Uni is "good" - UGC, AICTE etc. But I think Welingkar may be another "study centre" and our resident and real expert on Indian Education, msganti, has indicated in the past that there can sometimes be problems associated with them. I'd tend to want his opinion on this one before yours, Dr. Rich. Johann
Seemingly a legitimate study centre affiliation w/Mumbai Steve: E.g., The Master in Management Studies (MMS) program is a 2 year full-time post-graduate program, conducted at Welingkar. On successful completion, the student gets an MMS degree of the University of Mumbai. I read through the site thoroughly. It appears that all the degree programs, part-time or full-time, are offered on their campus, in India, so most of us far away will not have to concern ourselves with them. Yes, Welingkar offers quite a few degrees, but distance offerings are confined to certificates and diplomas. Johann
The perils of Wikipedia, Steve. DEC has been abolished. UGC is taking over its functions. Here's one of many articles. MHRD dissolves Distance Education Council; UGC to frame guidelines | India Education Review This in no way reflects on Welingkar's legitimacy. Johann
BTW - Welingkar's most expensive distance program - the one-year diploma - is just under $500, for foreign nationals. The "contact sessions" at their Indian centre are optional -- you don't have to go. I suspect it might be of very good educational value, if that's the kind of course someone is looking for. The PG Certs, like the degrees, are not available by distance. Johann
Like I give a *** what you want. Why make it personal? Of course, you were right about the degrees, and that I took a less-than-cursory look. But I didn't know it meant so much to you that you'd call me out like an a-hole. Which you are. Now that's personal, you jerk.)
... And thus spake the lofty Ph.D. Sticks and stones can break my bones, Rich. But whips and chains excite me! :jester: Johann
Rich and Johann. Please PM each other if you wish to continue your battle of witlessness. Actually, I'd prefer that you just stop, but PM it if you must. The next one to throw a punch in the public forum will be given some some time away from DegreeInfo to cool down. That includes any bickering in my direction over who started it or whether or not you or the other deserves to be banned.
Granted, that is out of date, but I meant that it shows that the place isn't some fly by night operation. And now I've changed the tenses in the article to account for that.
