This action goes to show the extent to which higher education quality/integrity is taken seriously in the UK, beyond just a money-making venture as it has become in the United States.
It will be interesting to see how the investigation unfolds and how high up the chain of command this government corruption goes.
The UK's been approving for-profit higher education initiatives recently. (Not that making money and providing quality education are incompatible, because they're not.)
I am almost sure TASMAC sold Question papers/answers before the exams. A few guys i know, who did MBA thro TASMAC got very good grades in MBA compared to their undergrad degree. University World News - UK: We feel duped by TASMAC, say Indian students Its all part of a BIG DIPLOMA SCAM no far from DIPLOMA MILLS.
Interesting stuff - it would be really interesting to understand how a state university went so far down hill without anyone able to stop it. For members of this forum the development does not really come as a surprise, so it is really strange why they didn't fix that issue earlier.
It's a surprise only if your premise is that people are universally honest. My assumption is that money was changing hands. I have no evidence of this but let's face it, it's a theory that answers many key questions. Is there a better competing theory? Why else would a large international university system continue to adopt substandard universities and take them under their wing despite the clear evidence that they were substandard? No one will ever be arrested but I'll bet that there is a set of U of W former employees who will never see a penny of their pensions and they'll never work in academia again. It's the British way. Keep it quiet. No scandal. Or else.
Bruce: "Wow.....if you sleep with dogs, you get fleas." John: Indeed. Now, since there are some one-time degree mills that actually shaped up and operate (or operated) legitimately -- LaSalle, for instance -- can we say that if you sleep with fleas, you get dogs?
Here's some micro-updates: BBC News - University of Wales effectively abolished in merger BBC News - After scandal, what happens now to University of Wales?
That would be nice, but government employees are typically not held accountable for their actions or the outcome of their actions. Take a look at Obama's Eric Holder for instance and his horrible record with the Fast and Furious deal. Most of the government employees in charge of this debacle have been promoted. The best way to get rid of a problem employee when they are a government employee is to promote them.
