I am so proud of my home state of Mississippi. Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree, a black man, won the Democratic gubernatorial runoff. DuPree came in first in the primary three week's ago and may be the first person to win the runoff who came in first in the primary. With 80% of the vote in, DuPree leads Bill Luckett 56%-44%. DuPree now faces GOP Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant in November.

When I lived in Mississippi I remember a black man coming to my door saying he was campaigning for a seat in the state legislature. He offered me a brochure. I said "What party?" and he got this hang-dog look on his face as if he was thinking, "damn, another red neck Republican." He said kind of reluctantly "Democratic." I said Okay and invited him in to talk. He was so relieved after having so many doors shut in his face. I did vote for him but he didn't win.
He's been a good mayor and has a very detailed platform for economic growth and raising the educational standards.
I'll let one of my best friend's know. He is a bit of a chubby chaser and is always looking for new prospects.
I may be in the minority, but I think politicians should be elected based solely on their qualifications, experience, and their stands on the issues. Their race, gender, and every other benign, non-behavioral characteristic about them should be irrelevant. I'm an unabashed political conservative, and while I can't stand people like President Obama, Representative Charlie Rangel, and Representative Maxine Waters, that has absolutely nothing to do with their race, just their politics. I'm a fervent supporter of Representative Allen West, and I really hope he runs for President some day, because I would follow that man through the front gates of Hell.
