Ok, so I have $300 left over I can spend outside my budget. Do I sign up with strighterline, or take 3 clep/DSST exams. I need Eng Comp 2 and some math classes. Or should I pay for a credit bank with EC?
So, I'll assume you need general education courses, but since I don't know what you have or need, I'll just toss a few ideas out there. This spends $300 for 24gen ed credits. This class set assumes average knowledge. If you are a foreign language speaker, I can do a better one for you 1. Sign up for ALEKS. Search for first month free code, then pay $20 for 1 month. Take Intermediate Algebra, then Introduction to Stats. If you have any days left, try College Algebra. Possible credits: 9 ($20) 2. Sign up for 2 CLEP general exams. Suggest: College Math. You will exceed the knowledge necessary after doing ALEKS and it doesn't duplicate the 3 courses I listed. Second suggestion- Analyzing and Interpreting Literature. Very small amount of study needed. If you have taken either, instead do CLEP English Comp w/ Essay. Possible credits: 12 ($160) 3. Enroll in a summer course. Suggest community college- Clovis, California, or Colorado systems are very inexpensive, take a class not offered via CLEP/DSST. (+/- $100) Use ebay, half dot com, etc for your book- buy an older edition and don't take a class that requires a WebCT code (cha-ching!) budget about $20. Possible credits: 3 ($120)
My first reaction is: take the exams. But, just so you know, I know nothing at all about Straighterline. Also, I've been getting the impression from what I've read here that a credit bank is usually unnecessary. Didn't I read somewhere that you just took and passed a CLEP? Now you know you can do it, so I say keep going!
I'm not sure how many credits you get from CLEP or DSST and not all colleges accept CLEP Eng Comp (including EC). For $234 you could earn 3 credits English Comp and 3 units Algebra from Clovis. If you go for 7 or more units cost zooms up.
>> Thanks Maniac. Since my post got deleted, here's a nutshell version: All gen eds, since I don't know what you need/have. None of these duplicate. 1. Sign up for ALEKS 1 month free trial plus buy 1 month. Complete Intro Algebra, Intro Stats. If extra time, do College Algebra. Total: 9 credits $20 2. CLEP General math, CLEP analyzing and interpreting lit. If already done, then use English Comp with Essay. Total: 12 credits $180-$200 3. Summer course from Clovis, Colorado or California community college systems. $100 + used book on ebay $20 Total: 3 credits $100-$120 Total cost $300-$340 Total credits: 24
Probably too late to take most Summer courses. Clovis tuition and fees total $184 for 3 units California CC tuition and fees total $574 for 3 units for non-CA residents ($91 for CA residents).
I am in summer classes at Clovis....does no one read my posts? lol I'm gonna take two in the fall as well, I won't need them but I want to take the classes. The rest of my needed classes will be clep and Strighterline and i will be done before fall semester is over (I Hope).
Well, if my name was "no one" then the answer would be yes. I read your posts and remember more than you probably wish I did.
Do you not need any math credits or electives? Because ALEKS really is the single cheapest way to get credit like cook said if there is any way you could possibly use it. Gotta stretch those dollars. I was able to complete 4 straighterline courses in one month. I was using them as pass fail so I could basically stop caring at 70%.
I would say spend it (you may have spent already) on CLEPS and DANTES. I loved the feeling a studying, taking the tests, then passing!!!! It still amazes, 3-4 just for passing 1 exam. How is school going? Abner
If you can speak Spanish, German or French very well, you can get up to 12-16 credits per language CLEP (also depends on the policies of the school accepting the CLEP results).
The foreign language ones are six to twelve credits, depending on your score. Still, that's a lot for ninety minutes and a hundred bucks. -=Steve=-
Yeah, I knocked out 12 credits (Spanish) in one fell swoop. What an awesome feeling, 12 creditos in one setting! Abner
That's generally true (and thanks for pointing that out), but IIRC, ESC offers up to 16 (anyone interested in ESC should double check that, though).
CLEP Tests for 6 Credits There are approximately thirteen CLEP tests that offer six credits each, one of which is College Mathematics. There is a list here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Level_Examination_Program
