Online high schools hit NBC Nightly News

A rather nice segment on online high schools was on NBC Nightly News this evening. You can see it here:

There are now about 2 million K-12 online students. Rather significant.

Hey Tom,

This is good for DL in general as stories like these help familiarize people with what we do. When I first started DL coursework at UOI several years ago, people would give me this strange look. Little by little, DL is becoming more mainstream.

It's kinda funny, when I first read about online high schools a few months ago, I thought, gee wouldn't it be better for kids to attend face-to-face B&M high schools, wouldn't they be missing out by taking all their classes online?

Then I thought back to my own horrible high school experiences and thought ... yeah, online is the way to go!

Having online courses would seem to be a good complement to homeschooling; where the parent(s) is/are involved but would have a lot of the work of preparing the curriculum done for them. I took a look at Liberty's high school program Liberty Christian Online Academy awhile back and the main barrier that I can see (other than the usual perceived inferiority of online learning) is cost ... I don't know how Liberty's programs compare to other online high schools but they don't seem cheap, especially compared to sending your kids to the local high school, which for lower income families may be their only option.
