    Dear Mr. Tan,

    Thank you for your e-mail.

Atlantic International university is a private nontraditional university. One of the main distinctions of our academic system is having an individualized curriculum for our students. We feel that each student, regardless of the field they are in, have different interests and goals. Thus each student needs different courses and requirements for their program. This individualization prevents AIU for having a fixed curriculum. Currently, US accrediting bodies require all Universities to submit their curriculum for review. In addition, Accreditation also puts many constraints of the way programs can be delivered to students. This would go against the Universities goals which are to facilitate a personalized education to professional adults. All of our students are required to have at least 2 years of work experience in their field or a related field. We focus of only core courses, no distribution courses. We do not serve the roll of developing young students out of high school like most traditional 4 yr Colleges at the undergraduate level.

The state of Oregon does not evaluate each institution it lists individually, it makes a blanket assumption that all unaccredtited schools are bad. This could not be farther from the truth and most likely the source of lobbying from traditional Colleges who felt threatened by the growth and changing face of educational providers, especially those who do away with some of the major expenses of completing a college degree.

Our programs are recognized both in the US and Internationally, your course of study here will be similar to those of traditional colleges. You will share many of the same courses, however, the method of delivery and requirement will by quite distinct. Regarding your question about the USDLA, they do not accredit anyone, however AIU is an Institutional member.

AIU have submitted general information to MACEE for distribution to interested students. Their roll is simply to inform students of their educational alternatives.

I hope to hear from you about this and hope you will choose AIU as countless other professionals such as yourself have.

    Best regards,
    Richard Anton

The website is run by Ricardo Gonzalez from 16485 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles, Florida -- which is unexpected for a Hawaii university.

At the same address in Honolulu, one finds, for instance, the Ocean Club, offering "beautiful women, private karaoke rooms, and complimentary puupuus."

The other address given, the Fort Street Mall, has also been the address of the less-than-wonderful Pickering University.

If they wanted to be taken off the Oregon list they could simply ask.

    Hi Jack, welcome to Degreeinfo.

Comments on Atlantic International University? Mine would be that you should be very careful before you send any money to these people.

AIU was sued by Hawaii's Mr. Brunton, and apparently reached a negotiated settlement with his office that included paying restitution to students in Malaysia:

    http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6257

The school's accreditation page contains Hawaii's legally required disclaimer in large print along with some very misleading text:

    http://www.aiu.edu/frasetaccredit.htm

It is true that Oxford and Cambridge lack American accreditation, but they possess the British equivalent, including the charters that established their individual colleges and continuing oversight by the British higher education funding authorities and by the QAA. (They also have slightly better academic reputations than AIU.)

I don't know what kind of reception AIU degrees would receive in Malaysia (my guess is poor, but you will need to make local inquiries), but they probably wouldn't be recognized by most of the American higher education community.

If you'd like, tell us what field of study you are interested in and what kind of degree you are seeking, and perhaps somebody could suggest some better options for you.
