For all TUI students... How much room exists in the curriculum to explore personal research interests and subject matter? At first glance (no electives in the Ed leadership program) it looks like a rigid curriculum. After 12 years of school I would like more say in what I read and explore.

As long as you can find a chair who is expert in your dissertation topic, I think anything is possible.

When I talked to Dr Steven Gold about similar kind of matter, he said TUI will hire external professors if the research area is an interesting one but TUI or Other Touro schools do not have an expert chair.

    Flexibility

I just emailed Touro this very concern. The response contained this:

"Regarding the Dissertation, although it is too early, nevertheless, we are very flexible of the topics as long as it is innovative, original, and stands by the standards of a PhD dissertation. Each student does what is an interest to them within the scope of Education. "

While I still have some concerns with regards to the relevance of the classwork to what I'm interested in, the flexibility of the program overall, plus the fact that there is very few other options afforded to me has allowed me to overcome any doubts and commit to the program.

Thanks for the input regarding dissertations. How about within the courses? Are your papers limited to professor directed questions, or can you explore related topics that interest you?

As a result of my graduate work, I have several education related interests that I would like to explore in a PhD/Ed D type program. I subscribe to three journals and have a short list of over 20 authors I want to read scholastically.

Is there room to explore subjects (namely sociology and politics) that relate to personal/profesional goals?

FYI- I waffling between a TUI PhD and an Excelsior MLS for the next step. Now if only Excelsior would go the next step and introduce a DLS or similar program...

    Flexibility 2

I'd hesitate to comment on flexibility of papers as I have not completed the program, so maybe someone else might have some better commments....

I will say that in my program, there are a number of core courses that are more general in nature. I'm assuming that in those, it will be up to me to orient my study towards my specific interest. I just have to make sure I'm also on topic.

Right now I'm working on a paper for a course in which the readings have little to do with my specific interest (study of the corporate side of things versus a classroom bent). However, the course long project allows me the flexibility to introduce, and cover content which is more on target with what I want to do (if that makes sense).

Each course contains topical information that might or might not be relevent to you. However there seems to be enough leeway to focus on what you want.

It is also my impression, although I have not done it, that the dissertation process allows that flexibility. The core courses are general enough, yet give you the tools to turn around and focus on what you want.

I was actually comparing Touro to Capella, and found Capella more focused in content to what I wanted. Touro on the other hand offered a little more flexibility to concentrate on what I wanted to do. I just could not find a program with the exact direction I wanted to go in on-line, so committed to a program the hopefully will address my interests and work with me to adjust my personal studies.
