For information there are two new postgraduate degrees now being offered by the University of London External Programme. These are:

MA Applied Educational Leadership and Management
    Lead College: Institute of Education

MSc Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health
    Lead College: Royal Veterinary College

Specific modules from the External Programme’s veterinary degrees have also recently been broken down as a series of and 35 hour and
50 hour short courses. These are intended as continuing professional development courses for those working with livestock as farmers or in veterinary and food handling roles.

    Brendan,

Do you know if the University of London is planning to offer some Engineering courses externally? Don't you think it is about time?

    Dear JLV,

As far as I am aware, there are no current plans to resurrect the MSc in Materials Science and Engineering or to create any new Engineering courses at present.

    Re: ENgineering at the U o L

    Greetings.

For what it's worth (which isn't much), I recently asked a UNISA representative whether bachelor level engineering degrees might become available after their merger. I asked because UNISA is merging with Technkion SA, which already offers not quite B Eng., BTECH "Electrical Engineering" and other engineering degrees. TSA requires lab work, but (like the old Grantham BSEE) TSA allows lab work to be done at ones job site (under the supervision of a designated mentor). If Technikon SA's idea spreads to UNISA, a fully distance, GAAP BSEE/etc. equivalent would finally become a reality! (At least for those who have suitable jobs. <g>)

Unfortunately, the representative had no idea whether any engineering degrees were on the horizon, but it would do one well to keep an eye on UNISA's offerings, just the same. That's what I intend to do!

    Cordially,
    Richard Kanarek

    Brendan,
I am looking for 18 hours of graduate level psychology without a lot of expense or "jumping though hoops". Is this possible in the UK? Or a complete Masters in Psychology that meets the above criteria would also be good.

    Thanks,

    Hi Howard,

There's nothing available through the University of London External Programme. The shortest Masters level courses we currently have in this area are individual modules of the MSc Organization Psychology / MSc Human Resource Management degrees. I’ve listed them below, please see www.londonexternal.ac.uk for more information:

    Selection and assessment
    Organizational change
    Life career development
    Career counselling theory and practice
    Work and well-being
    Motivation and performance at work
    Training and development
    New technology at work
    Employment relations
    Issues in human resource management
    International human resource management
    Practices in human resource management

However from what you say I don't think they'll fit your particular needs as they are each around 100 notional hours of study time.

The department of Organizational Psychology at Birkbeck, the lead college for this programme may have something suitable as a short course if you can get to London. They are after all the largest Organizational Psychology department in the UK! For further information please see either Birkbeck’s faculty of continuing education.

To find out about the rest of the UK (including DL options from other universities I’d recommend you look at the British Council website, Education UK.

    All the best,

    Brendan
