    Hi folks,

Some organizations claiming accreditation through the National Board of Education offer a "High School Diploma & Associate Degree By Exam." (NBOE is that Liberian effort based in Washington DC.) The degree-granting place is referred to as the "Branford Academy Preparatory High School."

To see what would happen, I took the exam, first at the Robertstown University site and then at the Saint Regis site. Now, I didn't think I would learn much about the process if I got all 100 of the multiple-choice questions right, so I selected the answers randomly for Robertstown (26 of the answers were actually correct) and then, with an eye towards doing even more poorly on the (identical) Saint Regis exam, picked a lot of wrong answers on purpose. (Only 21 of my 100 Saint Regis answers were correct.)

Robertstown offered me a high school diploma and AA degree, with GPA's of 2.8 and 2.7 respectively. My even-lower score for Saint Regis brought about an offer of both degrees with higher GPA's of 2.9 and 2.8. Both "schools" wanted $1000 for the pair of degrees.

It's fun to play with the numbers: if there's a linear relationship between test score and offered GPA, a zero score should correspond to a high school GPA of 3.3 or so. Another amusing figure is the number of pigeons, pecking randomly on the test forms, that could be expected to outscore my 21%. The answer is 75.3%! I never knew that the average pigeon was that well educated...

I did manage to find reference to a real "Branford Academy" on the web-- it's the "Branford Academy of Hair & Cosmetology" in Connecticut.

I have more info on the web here:

more data on Branford Academy tests

    Hi folks,

Through the "Interfaith Association of Ministries" at
    http://www.interfaithedu.org/
I took the Branford Academy test again, submitting a 14% score. They do have their standards, apparently-- they wouldn't sell me degrees, suggested I study, then retake the test.

I retook the test immediately, sending them a 100% score for variety. They decided this was too different from the previous test and still won't sell me degrees. (I guess I'll have to go back to Robertstown and Saint Regis.) They did ask that I send them all sorts of identifying information, including social security number, and asked me to have my local library proctor the test for me. That's a bit too much; besides, I don't want to give them all that identifying info.

teaching pigeons to do what pigeons do-do

There seem to be two more high school/AA enterprises associated with Saint Regis now:

Liberty College Preparatory High School at http://www.libertyprep.org/ and Mission College Preparatory High School at http://www.missionprepschool.org/ .

Both have IP address 66.236.24.230. (This is the same address as for www.branfordacademy.com and http://branfordprep.org.)

I know this is an old subject, but the bottom line, are these types of online "diplomas" real or not? Or are they all considered to be bogus? Does anyone know?

In reference to the Mission College Preparatory High School (www.missionprepschool.org)

    Thanks

Give the guy a break. It is clear he wants a HS degree. The question is, is he willing to work for it. The question I think he ought to be asking is if there are any honest HS equivalent degrees being offered online and if so, from which institutions.

I'm not clear, DeeEff. In your post, which previous poster is the "he" who desires a HS diploma?

themessenger is the person to whom I am referring. He's asked two questions on this forum and they appear to be round about ways of asking how to get a legit. HS diploma.

I don't understand the target market for these HS diplomas. Why not just take the GED? As far as I know, anyone can take the GED, and once you get it, you have total high-school equivalency. I graduated via the GED and it did not seem to be a negative factor in undergraduate admission.

    Speak for yourself, John Alden

"Yes. Mission Academy is an Official Branch of James Monroe University."

The above quote should answer all of the fellow's questions about the legitimacy of this outfit--especially if he bothers to read the whole thread.

Nobody can spend two minutes looking at this board without knowing the real deal on St Regis and its morphs. Nooobody.

If the inquiry is a good faith inquiry about getting an online high school diploma which is actually accredited, information can be found on the DETC website and through most state boards of education.

    here's why not

I imagine that the GED probably asks considerably harder questions, and you don't have an option to acquire an associate of arts degree with a GED. The first of 100 multiple-choice questions on the Branford, etc. test asked (still asks??) about the name of the building in which resides the US president. Four choices were offered, including the correct answer "White House." The rest of the test was about the same.

Yes, but how many PIGEONS can roost on the roof of the White House?

    more than 150,000 per year

They're virtual pigeons so as many as can open PayPal accounts will fit!
