I've spent an exhaustive amount of time and money registering with two distance ed schools to take these courses. One school - Boise State - is suffering from a state funding crunch and every time I apply for a course it is full. The other school - Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia - had a ridiculous amount of 'extra' costs for U.S. Students - totaling in excess of $1,500 - that they did not inform me about, despite the fact that I called them and specifically asked the total cost of taking courses via their distance learning program. Since I'd like to end this frustrating cycle of 'apply and reject' to yet another school, I'm wondering if anyone has successfully taken anatomy, physiology or organic chemistry courses via distance education courses. Many thanks.

    What level?

Are you looking for upper level or lower level course-work?

    Ron,

I am searching for lower level work as prepartory courses for entry to receive an RN.

Thank you Alex for your wonderful recommendations. I appreciate them very much.

    Ron,

Thank you again. Rio Salado Community College looks like an excellent choice for me. This has been so helpful!

Differential fees are a common thing, but if Dal wasn't forthcoming about these fees on its website or in any communications that they've had with you, then you are certainly right to be upset with them. If they only told you about the extra costs after you submitted an application, and if the extra costs were not indicated in the relevant course description or fee schedules on the Dal website, then you were most definitely given a raw deal.

    dlkereluk,

I researched the distance program at Dalhousie very well before applying and believe me, these extra fees are news to me. Although my application specifically stated that I would only be taking distance courses, they are now telling me that they have no ability to distinguish between students who are on campus and those only taking distance courses. Every time I phoned them for information I was given conflicting answers. And by the way, they do not provide an 800 number for phone calls. I withdrawing from the classes and intend to fight them to get my $200 'non-refundable' registration deposit returned. Dalhousie is telling me the deposit not-refundable, but with the stream of unreliable and misleading information they have provided, I believe that I deserve a refund.

I hope this information with prove helpful to students thinking about applying at Dalhousie.

Indeed--it's clear to me that you did do your research. You seem not to have been given very good "customer service" in your interactions with Dal.

All institutions should be "up front" with information regarding fees, and present a consistent message regarding these fees to people who ask about them. It shouldn't require phone calls on the part of students, or an inordinate amount of "clicks" to find simple information such as the TOTAL cost of a course.

    Darren,

Thank you for your response. Currently, I'm trying to get my $200 'non-refundable' registration fee back from Dalhousie. This situation continues to be frustrating and time-consuming, as the registrar's office now wants my documentation as to who I spoke with so they can find out who was giving me misleading information. Taking care of this has become something of a part-time job for me.

This university needs to clean up its act and become more user-friendly for distance education students. Because I was in contact with the school via email and long-distance phone calls for nearly three months in an attempt to get reliable, accurate information, I accumulated a massive amount of emails and a paper trail which I didn't keep because the information I received was conflicting and confusing. My hope is that Dalhousie doesn't penalize me for not keeping a record -- I wasn't preparing for a courtroom trial -- I'm just a distance education student trying to sign up for two classes!

St. Petersburg College ( formerly St. Petersburg Junior College but now offering 4 year degrees ) has Anatomy and Physiology lecture and lab ( lab components are important for RN students)
    http://www.spcollege.edu/ecampus/ecourse/index.shtml

    Chemistry is also available online.

Florida in state tuition is about $50 per credit hour. Out of state tuition is generally about 4 times as much.

Good luck, you will like nursing I do ( at least for the first 13 years so far).

    HS Courses

You might also check into California College for the Health Sciences-RA accreditation and can get full degrees through Masters level, I think.
