Folks - I'm in Ft. Lauderdale this week on my semi-annual trek to Nova Southeastern's School of Business. Tonight we had our traditional wine and cheese reception. As always this is a good chance to talk with faculty and staff.

I was hoping for some official announcement on the conversion from offering a DBA to offering a PhD. No announcement was forthcoming. However, I did pick up the following:

    1. The PhD offering is in the design stage. Although no one would say for sure, it appears that final approval may not come until early next year with the first enrollment in the fall of 2004. This is the first new PhD program added at NSU in some time. Hence, the SBE has to ensure all details are covered.

    2. Also, the idea of DBA grads returning to earn a PhD is up in the air. Although this had been suggested before, the faculty didn't seem too keen on it now.

    3. AACSB is now being talked about again. Given the new AACSB standards (issued in April) and their focus on "paticipating faculty" as opposed to "full-time" faculty, NSU may be able to achieve it. SBE has been using their "national faculty" (i.e. adjuncts) in curriculum design and other non-teaching tasks. Again, no promises - but key folks are reading the AACSB document closely.

    4. The new building is getting closer to reality. Occupancy should come in the fall. Located next to the library (the largest in Florida), this should be an ideal place for students to do their residency.

Overall, all seems well here at NSU.

    Regards - Andy

Does this mean DBA is inferior to PHD ?
Is PHD regarded superior to DBA in academic and professional world ?

    Thanks,

That sounds great. But isn't NSU accredited by another business addreditor?

NSU is accredited by IACBE - IMHO the bottom accreditor of the three business school accreditors in the U.S.

I suspect that they would like to step up to AACSB if they could without destroying their basic business model.

As for DBA versus PhD - I really don't see much difference. Some schools issue one - some the other. There is no real consistency on this subject.

    Regards - Andy
