    Hi All,

Does anyone know how much does , e.g., UOP, pay to its professors for teaching one class per term?

I don't know about UOP specifically, but my experience as an adjunct is that the pay is typically $2,500 to $3,500 per 3 semester-credit graduate course.

Going freight for a 6 week on-line grad course is in the range of $1700 to $1800 at three different schools I know of.

On-ground teaching at schools with 15 week terms tends to pay better - in the $2,500 to $3,500 range for a grad class and somewhat less for undergrad.

    Regards - Andy

I spoke to a UoP rep and was told the online and campus postion paid the same. They pay $900 to $1,200 per class for a 5 or 6 week class (depends on the class). The salary range is based on you having an MS or a PhD and if you are teaching at a grad level or undergrad level.

    Hope this helps.

    Salary at Argosy

Argosy offered $3k, and $3,500 if you were willing to teach larger classes. This was last year, Los Angeles campus. Now they're in a financial crisis, so I don't know if wages have changed.
BTW, those of you adjuncts-how was the interview? Did you present a portfolio, or just resume? How quickly were you notifiied of the decision?

    Salaries and job description

Salaries differ and so does the job description. In some cases, the course is written and the online teacher just teaches. In other cases, the online teacher must also prepare the course material and in some cases must create the course from scratch.

Salaries should be based on how much prep time goes into creating the course. This does not happen as a general rule. I've been paid the same for "just" teaching and "design and teaching."

So when talking about salary, it's best to find out if one will be stepping in to teach a fully designed course or whether one will have to spend additional hours before and during the course preparing material, learning activities, assessments, etc.

I don't have a clear preference -- I like both situations. In the first situation, I don't have all that extra prep work to do. In the other, I can design as I please (and that is my area of expertise) for effective online learning.

When "interviewing" for online teaching jobs, be sure to find out the exact instructional expectations. Oh and don't expect to get paid until your course is over. That's just the way it's done most places, whether it's 5-6 weeks, 8-10 weeks, or 15-16 weeks -- adjuncts get paid when the course ends.

RE: portfolio or resume -- some tips:
    (1) academics usually use a CV instead of resume
    (2) have both rtf document and electronic CV
    (3) an online portfolio (mine is a website) is always good
    (4) double and triple check spelling and grammar on EVERYTHING

    Happy job hunting :)

    Andy,

May I ask what schools offer these salaries?

No clue what UoP pays, but $1800-ish is the going rate round these parts; $2200 is considered very good for adjuncting a 15-17 week semester. Online teaching $26.25 per contact hour. And that's with a PhD and significant teaching experience at the university -- not continuing education / personal enrichment -- level, at an accredited university (not a mickey-mouse online outfit). But no names, no pack drill.

And gee, I think I've posted this before.

    Re: Salaries and job description

No kidding......I would have never thought of an online portfolio/resume/CV or whatever they are calling it these days.

That is such a cool idea....would you mind PM me your link to take a look (as an example) to see how you constructed it?

I may do this...I am so tired of paper credentials...it wastes too much ink cartridges.

    Thanks.:D

I have current information from them that confirms this. It appears each class meets 6 times, hence the lower pay. (IIRC, the remaining work for each class is done by independent study in student workgroups.)
