    University of Honolulu threatens DegreeInfo!

The following was just received. It's particularly amusing in that U of Honolulu hasn't even been on our radar. Of course, now that Mr. Allen has brought his fine, less-than-wonderful institution to our attention, there are some interesting things on his website.

-- He admits in his letter that his school is unaccredited, yet he claims several forms of fraudulent accreditation on his website.

-- His website is clearly in violation of Hawaiian law, in that it does not disclose its unaccredited status, as required. Except that the school, other than its name, apparently makes no claim of domicile in Hawaii.... interestingly, it's "world headquarters" are in Delaware, and it's "admin offices" are in Utah, both states that strongly frown on bogus schools. (Attorneys general in both states have already been notified.)

And, of course, the message itself is a sterling literary masterpiece, fitting of a highly educated senior official of a university :)

Oh... and the U of Honolulu website has been safely mirrored and stored so that when they change it (and I'm sure they will), we will still have the original, in all its less-than-wonderful glory.

    Dear Incharge,

We have seen several links you have placed against us on the google site and this you have been doing for last 3 yrs. We are now out of patients and we are going to take you to court and take legal action against you for trying to damage our creditability. Under the American law it does not require us to get accredited and you seem to be the inforcer on this issue and you have been chasing us for a while.

I am handing over this matter to our Corporate lawyer to take further action in court against you and we will file damages against you for trying to ruine our business.

If you want to avoid legal action then you either remove your links immediately or get ready to face legal action in court.

    Best Regards,

    Mark Allen

C’mon. Chip, give the guy a break! Can’t you see he is out of patients (mental, most certainly) for his fine institution? :D :D :D

    Some legal advisor!

What's with the horribly written letter? If you want even a shred of credibility, at least use the write, oops, I mean, right words and spellcheck.

    Chip (AKA Mr. Incharge),

You are making this up, right?

Seriously, I did a search on Google for "University of Honolulu" limited to the degreeinfo.com domain.

I found one post in which Jeffrey Brunton (AKA Mr. Big Incharge) stated that this "school" was being investigated by the state of Hawaii.

I wonder if their "Corporate lawyer" earned his degre from the (apparently) now defunct University of Honolulu School of Law?

Isn't it usually the anonymous posters that threaten to sue? How one can libel an anonymous person, I will never know.

University of Honolulu - unfortunately I don't have any dirt on it. If I find some, I will make sure I share the news.

I am not sure whether Jeff has a judgement against them, but if you do find an address or the address of a legal representative, please be sure to let Jeff know.

There appear to be several institutions using the "University of Honolulu" moniker. The "University of Honolulu USA" seems to be this one: http://www.uhedu.net/

I see Mark Allen is listed on the site as "Director of Marketing" but in his ludicrous email gives himself the title of "Corporate Legal Affairs Advisor." A promotion, I presume.

What I want to know, is how do they excpect you to remove a link from Google?

Well, just because they're angry doesn't make them practical...or very smart. Sounds like the school should start a mediation or anger management program...unaccredited of course.

Who needs accreditation when your diploma can be notarized? :)

    Q. Does University of Honolulu notarize its diplomas? Can I have an attested attached?

    A. University of Honolulu will attach an attested or have its diplomas notarized when requested by the student. The student is responsible for payment to cover the notary or attested cost.

    Couple of clarifications:

The threatening email came from the uhedu.net domain, so presumably it's *that* University of Honolulu that is threatening us.

I did send a response (something I usually don't bother doing) pointing out that the only reference on Google was from Jeffrey Brunton who, as an attorney general for Hawaii, would certainly be in a position to speak without libeling said school.

And I also pointed out that threatening us always has the opposite effect of what was intended by the person making the threats... so my guess is that we might hear a little more sputtering, if anything, and not much else. However, authorities in Delaware and Utah will probably feel differently :)

As to the actual position of Mr. Allen, I would wager that he's probably Corporate Legal Affairs Advisor, Director of Marketing, Website Designer, Primary Instructor, and various other things. (Did anyone notice that, among the long list of (presumably nonexistent) faculty and staff, no credentials are listed for anyone? )

This is apparently not the same organization as the University of Honolulu School of Law, which according to the California State Bar, is located in Modesto, California. (I guess the beaches are less crowded in Modesto.)

Did I understand the letter to say that because Google links to his silly mill that he's going to sue DegreeInfo???? Does this fellow believe that DegreeInfo is responsible for the whole world wide web???

Yeah, that's the gist of it. Pretty soon, they're going after Google for being too thorough of a search engine.

Wow, Chip! "Attorneys general"--the Carpathian weeps for joy. You have restored my faith in, well, something or other. It doesn't take much to make an old man happy. Thank you.

If this guy is on the level then I can't even get any satisfaction out of believing that he's reading reading this thread and getting upset because I can't imagine that he's computer literate enough to even find this thread!

He must need help even printing the diplomas.
