    I don't know if this update has been provided here. However, below is an excerpt from a recent memorandum of agreement released by UNISA, TSA, and Vista (Dated July 29). As many of you know, these three institutions are preparing to merge at the beginning of 2004. The following portion of the memorandum pertains to the naming of this institution, a topic that I know interests many of us.

    "10. We acknowledge that presently the following two names have been proposed: University of South Africa (ODL) and Open University of South Africa (OUSA). Both names should be assessed taking into consideration the implications of the financial risk of the name. A cost-benefit analysis of all matters pertaining to the naming/branding of the new institution should be conducted and submitted.

    11. We also acknowledge that in naming the new university all relevant factors should be taken into account. It is our view that the name of the new institution must:

    represent the vision, mission, goals, ethos, philosophy and aspirations of the new institution. In a sense, the name should be aspirational rather than merely descriptive;
    be reassuring to prospective students and potential donors, especially with regard to standards, the stature of its academics, researchers and students;
    reflect the principles and objectives of the National Plan for Higher education;
    be sensitive to the full implications of a name and branding for the future of the new institution.
    12. We note the following primary branding considerations:

    whether to retain the name of an existing institution but design and develop a new corporate identity for the new institution; or Introduce a new name and corporate identity. The process of branding should consider the consolidation of operational aspects of the institution and be a firm basis for a new brand."

    So, perhaps this contentious issue is drawing near to its resolution.

    One correction: this document is being referred to as a "Joint Declaration." It is to be followed shortly by a "Memorandum of Agreement."

    I'd vote for the original name (UNISA). I just don't see that anything would be gained by a change. I can understand how the other institutions might want to feel like their subsumption made some difference, but as someone once pointed out to me, "It's all ego." It doesn't necessarily benefit the organization.
