Walden University will accept Berne's degrees

    Sent to Walden University (8/8/03)

    "Dear Sir/Madam:

Please advise if you would accept a Master's degree from Berne University (St. Kitts, West Indies) for admission to your PhD program, if such degree has been evaluated by a NACES member as equivalent to a Master's degree from a regionally accredited university in the USA.

    Thanks"

    Response from Walden University (12/12/03)

    "Hello,
If your degree has been reviewed by the NACES we do accept it. Please call me to get your application process rolling."

    Walden University's policy:

International applicants with degrees from universities outside the United States or Canada must have their academic transcripts evaluated and certified by an independent agency approved by Walden University. Walden University accepts only evaluations conducted by members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES). Please pay any fees associated with this evaluation directly to the agency that conducts the evaluation."

Re: Walden University will accept Berne's degrees

    Hi, "Regina".

This post seems to be a simple restatement of Walden's general policy. He/she contacts admissions, names a foreign school, says that it has already been evaluated as the policy requires, and the school replies with the predictable 'go ahead and apply'. The unstated implication is that when the application is received and processed by the university's admissions committee, nobody will pick up on Berne's doubtful off-shore accreditation status. That unstated assumption is questionable.

But these repeated marketing attempts do highlight a couple of points that I've been making repeatedly:

    1. "GAAP" procedures are subject to being beaten by "universities" flying "flag of convenience" approvals obtained from lax foreign jurisdictions. We have seen repeated attempts to accomplish precisely that, with Berne, St. Regis (and all of its many affiliates), Greenwich (Australia acted quickly to plug that loophole), the University of San Jose/Empresarial, Columbia Commonwealth, MIGS, and perhaps IUFS (depending on what those Russian language documents really say.) There are undoubtedly more.

    2. The newest frontier is credential evaluators. If a mystery school claiming off-shore approval from country X can be treated as if it were de-facto accredited providing that it is "evaluated" by an evaluator, and if all that evaluator does is check to make sure that the school is approved by the off-shore government, all we have is a circular procedure that accomplishes absolutely nothing, except pulling a fig-leaf over a bit of academic chicanery.

You may not be aware of developments between Berne University Alumni and Walden University following John’s self-serving post on the non-acceptance of degrees by Walden University.

NOTE that the email indicating that Walden will accept Berne’s master's degree(with NACES endorsement) for admission the their PhD program was issued after John’s posting.

When the legal mechanism takes control, rest assured that all will confirm to standing policies, regulations and in general, standard operating procedures. Hearsay from John and others serves as “entertainment”only for this forum.

Also, Walden was not aware of John’s intention and history. Also, I have read on this forum that John was sued by Berne University, and he hastily settled the case in favor of Berne University, as it was clear that John was intentionally publishing misleading information about Berne University. He agreed to and published the correct information on his web site for a while.

I do not believe that he has forgotten the bitter experience and lesson, so vendetta is to be expected. Further, John is known to have been associated with and benefited from a university deemed a diploma mill.

John has never denied that he was sued by Berne University.
