My undergraduate alma mater (MIchigan Tech) ) has an interesting DL option. A BS in a cohort aggrangment of 5 or more. They handle the basic lab by requiring you to have the course before you enroll (probably at local jc).

A key element of any student's Ph.D. program is the direct interaction between the student and advisor. To facilitate student-faculty interaction, it is anticpated that the MTU faculty advisor will spend three to six months in residence at the student's employer, advising and directing the doctoral student's research.
So you just hired a college professor for 3-6 months, interesting, but pricey (doesn't say but I think I know who picks up the tab).
