What does Excelsior's transcripts look like? Ex:

    ENG 101 3.0 Sem. Hr. 4.0 Grade
    MAT 101 3.0 3.0
    SPCH (exam?) 3.0 4.0

Does it say anything about Testing, Examinations, CLEP, DSST, or EXE?

Is credit bank on the transcript if you are not enrolled, or is it just a transcript?

It lists them under headings, as it does schools

    Like:

    University of Maryland University College

ENGL 101 Intro to writing A
    HIST 157 History of the US:1857- A
    etc.

They use the titles and numbers directly from the transcript

I have different heading for each school, and each test service. They list all grades, and assign grades for regents/excelsior, DSST, and CLEP tests. They do not calculate a GPA and list it on the transcript, even though they did calculate it to put cum laude on my diploma.

You also can add to your transcript post graduation for 25 bucks, not a bad deal. Unfortunatley many organizations/schools ask for original transcripts from all these sources, so I pay over 100 bucks every time this is asked of me.

So if you have an exam credit from DANTES it would read?

    Dantes

Intro. to Bus. A or just

    Intro. to Bus. ?

Excelsior College grants letter grades for Excelsior College Examinations, all 37 DANTES Subject Standardized Tests, and the following CLEP examinations.
    • American Literature
      Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
      English Literature
      Freshman College Composition
      American Government
History of the United States I
History of the United States II
      Principles of Macroeconomics
      Principles of Microeconomics
      Psychology (Introductory)
      College Algebra
      Principles of Management
The transcript will indicated the name of the exam, indicate whether it was an ECE, CLEP or DANTES examination and the grade. GRE subject exams, IT Certification exams, and any CLEP exams not listed above are recorded only as Pass (P) or Fail (F).

Are you sure about that, Gus?

Rosie hasn't got a transcript yet from Excelsior. But I assume it would be similar to the Student Status Report, which gives the numeric score as well as the "P":

    GRE SUBJECT TESTS
    2002/12 PSYCHOLOGY (570) P 12.00

I was referring to the letter grade (as in only P or F instead of A, B, C, etc.). I made no mention of the raw scores or adjusted scores, or percentiles for exams.

Usually, whether letter grades or pass/fail grades are awarded is what people care about.

But in this thread, PLCScott was asking "What do Excelsior's transcripts look like?" So I'm afraid your response was a bit misleading.

The primary reason most people care about what is on their transcript is because that is what other institutions will see and evaluate. Most schools (and especially those that do not give letter grades or even credit for proficiency exams) would not know how to interpret or assess raw numerical scores (in the context of undergraduate credit and grades). In evaluating the transcript for a degree, it is the letter or pass/fail grade that is of prime importance to them. If the transcript is being evaluated for transfer credit, however, then the fact that credit was granted for an examination might play a role in whether the transfer credit is accepted or not. For example, GRE examinations as a means of obtaining undergraduate credit are probably not acceptable for transfer to the vast majority of U.S. regionally accredited institutions.

Only to you, Mark, only to you. You will notice that several questions were asked. As I did not quote any of them in my response, why must my post be an answer to a question of your choosing? Nothing in my post was incorrect or misleading. If you wish to add to the information, that is fine, but if you are attempting to take up the boorish hobby of “Gunning for Gus,” you are simply going to have to do better than that. (I will admit, however, that you would probably make a much more worthy adversary than those who have recently taken up the avocation.) :D

Thanks for your replies. This is my concern. If on their transcripts it is recorded as, Dantes Intro to Bus. P, then I am concerned that might not fly at Clemson, or some other B & M schools. Clemson very rarely accepts CLEP according to the registrar’s office. I would rather see their transcripts not mention anything about an exam.

I am waiting for the video game versions of "Gunning for Gus."

I can think of many scenarios but maybe I shouldn's share, although it would have to revolve around the title character's paranoia.

Maybe Bill Huffman could write the code for this game, and Gus could market it. He could make it pop up each time you visited his site. It would at least make a few bucks around here. :D

No, not paranoia, but instead real life. As the old saying goes, “Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean someone isn’t out to get you.” ;)

Laugh if you like, but the idea for “Gunning for Gus” came about as a result of my wife’s consternation about the kooks that were enquiring about who I was, and where I lived, on a public forum to which I had never even posted.

She mentioned that it reminded her of the oft-told tale (depicted in many movies) of the old gunslinger who only wants to lead a peaceful existence and be of service to the community, but cannot escape his reputation, and every upstart pistolero trying to make a name for himself seeks him out to challenge him to a duel. The old gunslinger is usually forced to fight by some threat to the public good, and does so only reluctantly. The gunslinger never draws his gun first, first attempts only to wound and not to kill, but we all know how the story ends.

Needless to say, there will always be the bevy of wounded (now cast in the role of town drunks) awaiting their next “champion,” whom they will cheer on mindlessly in hopes that he will gun down the gunslinger, and thereby, somehow, exonerate them.

Happiness is a warm gun, yes it is, (Bang Bang Shoot Shoot). :D :D :D

    Plcscott,

There is a title right before the examinations that label what they are:

    CLEP examinations:

    Intro to Psych (65) - A 3 credits
    Analyzing and Intrepeting Lit (56) - B 3 credits
    College Algebra and Trig (70) - P 3 credits
    and so on...

First of all, if you are afraid they will see the "P" or "F" revealing the nature of the credit earned it may not matter. I say this because odds are as soon as they see your Excelsior Transcript they will ask you for a CLEP transcript, and ALL of the other class that you did not do through Excelsior (which is probably ALL of them). So, if they do not take CLEPs, they will know. As far as transfering from one Excelsior to another undergrad program, I would say its almost pointless to give them the Excelsior. This is because A LOT of schools want the transcripts from original colleges that the course was taken (they do not want to take Excelsior's word that you earned 3 credit hours in Intro to Psych).

    Best Regards,
    Bill

Whether a school asks for original transcripts may depend on what proportion of the total credits are transfer or exam credits, and whether you are transfering credits, rather than presenting a finished degree. I have about 5 credits that were transferred into the University of Southern California for my bachelor's degree, and I completed the degree. When I've applied to two master's programs and when I've applied for jobs, no one ever asked for a transcript from the university that granted the transfer credits (UCLA).

    Bill:

Good information. I am very concerned with taking exams, and trying to transfer them to a school that does not readily accept exam credit. What is the acceptance of exam credit in transferring to another bachelor program, or getting into grad. school? I am certain that with a Excelsior degree you could go on to many grad programs, but to any? I can't say that I am interested in just any grad. school if I decide to go that route. I would rather go to one in my state that is recognized.

  17. Two thoughts:

    1) Some colleges will effectively waive all lower-division General Education requirements for "second baccalaureate" students who already have a bachelor's degree from a RA institution but wish to complete a second Bachelor's degree in a different field. In effect, you'd have to finish the upper-division "major" requirements for the second degree, but nothing else. Others treat your previous work as normal "transfer credit" which is obviously problematic if that school won't otherwise accept your credits-by-exam. It's worth checking their catalog.

    2) I've never encountered anyone-- either on this board or in "real time"-- who had difficulty in grad school admissions on account of exam-based credits, to include people who went the exam route WAY before it was "cool." As for the Excelsior-Grad School part, I can only relate what a colleague was told "off the record" by a Princeton faculty member about his application for admission to a master's program:

"Greg, the problem isn't that your undergraduate degree is from Stockton. The problem is that it isn't from Princeton."

They never asked for UNDERGRAD transcripts correct? You have already completed the degree, so it's a different story. However, if you DIDN'T finish the bachelors degree and pursued a different undergrad school for transfer, odds are they will ask you for each college you went to (basically making it pointless to show them your Excelsior transcript).

    Best Regards,
    Bill

    Thanks Bill:

I think I am going to try to take the exams, and after everything is accumulated try to transfer them to the schools I am interested in. If that does not work then I will just settle for excelsior, tesc, or cosc though I would much rather graduate from a more reputable school. I have already gone opposite route. :(

    Regards,

    Scott
