Does anyone know how the credit banking works at Excelsior, TESC, and COSC?
For instance, Say you send all your credits to Excelsior and you have 95 credits to bank. If you go to transfer those credits to a B & M school will the receiving school get an official transcript from Excelsior with your credits listed, or will they get a list that has credit bank as a title?
I am interested in moving my credits to one of these schools, and testing up to the 95 to 100 credit level. I have found that most schools require a minimum 25% of the degree you seek to be completed at that particular school, so I would like to then transfer in the other 75%. I would not want to send the school a credit bank sheet as I am concerned that the schools I am interested in may not accept credits from these schools anyway.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hi Scott

The credit bank concept doesn't really work very well. Schools will not accept the credit bank transcript for credit. They require that you send a sealed transcript from each school attended and will look at testing credit independent from the credit bank transcript. All it really amounts to is list of credit achieved.

So if you enroll at Excelsior or others and the transcripts list a course with a grade then it would be easier to transfer? What is the difference?

Some what. If you actually enrolled it would be listed on your transcript as credit earned. If you try to transfer credit gained from testing most if not all institutions will not accept the credit but instead apply it to what ever non-traditional/testing program they have. There may be exceptions to this. On the other hand if you actually graduate most schools will accept the degree and have specific requirements for a second degree.

P.S. On your credit bank transcript tests would be listed as tests w/o grades. On an EC transcript tests would be listed with credit granted and (for ones that are graded by EC) grades.

Because most schools ask for transcripts from the original schools, I don't think there is much utility in the credit banking service from Excelsior (atleast utility for transferring to a different school). I think it would be useful for a job. Let's say you have course work in electronics and physics from different schools, but do not have a degree. You can show a potential employer that you are qualified for some technical job by showing him the Excelsior credit banking transcript rather than showing him 15 transcripts from different colleges you have attended.

    Best Regards,

I tried that route, and it did not work. Credit banking is for work advancement.

When you credit bank is it like a regular transcript? I have courses at three different schools, and I was hoping to trnasfer them all ot Excelsior, so that I would have one transcript with all my courses and grades. I thought then I could take a few test, and have the 75% of courses needed for the degree I was interested in at a local B & M school.

How do the exam credits show up on Excelsior's transcript? Is it just a credit with a grade, or does it state by examination?

It definately would not work for transfering to another school. All schools I have come across require a transcript from the school you attended or directly from the testing service. The exams show up as exam and then the credit granted for them. If however you get the degree from RC most schools will accept the degree and you would only need the additional 25% for a second degree.

That is probably a good idea. If I am going to pay the money I might as well get a degree from there.

Bears' Guide, 13th Edition, Chapter 17 "The Credit Bank Service", says: "There is, happily, an ideal solution to this problem: the Regents College Credit Bank [...]. The Credit Bank issues a single widely accepted transcript [...]."

Do we all agree that this is misleading?

Did Carlos and I both waste money because of those words "widely accepted"?

I'm aware of Dr Bear's problems with Ten Speed, but isn't it worth at least trying to get a correction posted at http://www.degree.net/updates/bearsguide14/index.html?
