Asking the many DL veterans and researchers who live on this board...

Are there any rumors of a future doctorate for Excelsior, now that they are private (98)? They seem to be in an expansion mode. From what I can tell thru alumni magazines, the MSL program is growing.

I can envision a market for Liberal arts doctorates, probably DA or D Litt as a PhD doesn't really fit with a broad liberal arts curriculum. There are only a few such residency programs, one is a DA in Humanities from SUNY-Albany, and the other is a night school D. Litt in Humanities at Drew University in NJ.

Lets face it, accredited DL doctorates in Liberal Arts (general or specific majors) are unheard of - there may be a market for it.

Merge an expanded Excelsior MSL program, a short Albany residency or two, a teaching component, dissertation, and you could whip out a DA in Liberal Studies program that would make the univeristy a lot of $$.

If they'd give me free tuition and fees I love to help them set it up!! (he said with a wink)

Does anyone know what ever happen to their MBA program that was pending?

I would imagine a MBA may be a little to formal and structured for Exclesior. I could see a MA or MS in Professional Studies, like COSC (or is it TESC?) has. The MLS will not take "applied professional" credit.

On that note... I would love to see schools loosen up on the mandantory major/minor preresiquites. You can do the work or you can't. If you want a doctorate in the liberal arts, dont even think about coming in with a masters in education... they think you are not a scholar ... and vice versa.

If Excelsior starts a DL DA I'll beat a path to their door!

I seem to recall a thread ages ago on a.e.d. where Dan Eisenberg, then the MLS director, complained about Levicoff posting an in-house proposal for an Excelsior doctorate.

An external DA in liberal studies would be an interesting idea. To the best of my knowledge, there are no plans for Excelsior to set one up any time soon.

Aside from Union Institute, are there any doctorate DL programs that focus on the liberal arts. Everywhere you look you see business, management, and educational leadership, but no cool stuff.

Given that you're currently based in the UK, why not
have a look at the Open University or Birkbeck? Start as a part-timer now, and they'll probably (depending on the phase of the moon) have no objection to you becoming a DL PhD student once your next posting comes up.

In fact, if you're in Cambridgeshire, you might even find this link quite interesting!

Other than that, it's UNISA or Oz.
