I don't pay a great deal of attention to the diploma mill/degree mill discussions here. But, I was just questioned about Kennedy Western. I seem to remember that this is at least a "less than wonderful" school. Can someone please bring me up to date? I don't want to mislead the questioner.

Worse than less-than-wonderful. Outright bad. I'm sure others can give you all the gory details.

    Hi Roger,
KW used to be in California years back, (and I believe moved to Hawaii when California tightened up its regulations). They are now in Wyoming, and their license expires on June 30/2001 (the license is shown on KW's website). I have heard via the grapevine that Wyoming is now tightening up its regulations, but I can't depend on that for inference because the guy who told me was A. Hassan, the v-p of SUI, also licensed in Wyoming. I suppose that one criterium that makes them less-than-wonderful would be their migration from one state to another. There is no claim on KW's website of accreditation from wacky accreditors so that criterium would seem to be unfilled. Perhaps John Bear has a comment or two.

One other piece of information about KW, much of "the school" remains in California. However, to retain a state license, they moved a portion to Wyoming. At one point they also had an office in Hawaii and I think initially moved from California to Idaho before Wyoming. Regardless, while they retain a California presence, they are prohibited from accepting students from California.

I cannot speak to the quality of their programs other than to pass on what I have read/been told of their history.

KW represents all I don't understand about unaccredited education. You can most likely enroll, successfully learn C programming or business management or such, and receive a 'diploma' or 'degree.' However, more HR departments are checking the accreditation behind the credential and you'll end up short with KW.

Tell your friend that if he or she is going to spend time and money to break into IT or business or some other career, either a) go with a legitimately accredited degree program, or b) pursue a reading list, write and document a couple projects or programs as appropriate to the area of study, and present that at the interview.

Unaccredited education (in commodity areas such as the IT field) amounts to paying somebody too much money for a glorified reading list.

For the uninitiated, the reason these things are important is that they are tricks that degree mills frequently do to avoid prosecution for their fraud. They are things that real bona fide schools very seldom (to never) do.
