Hi All, Let's make a guess what is or are the chances for each and individual institution that will gain DETC Accreditation by Jan 2004 or June 2004, from scale 1 to 10. (whereas 1 is the least chance to gain accreditation) Institutions Seeking Initial Accreditation: AHS Institute, Association for Hebraic Studies, Suffern, NY California Coast University, Santa Ana, CA Central State University, Riverside, CA Century University, Albuquerque, NM Educational Correspondence Training School, Erie, PA IMPAC University, Punta Gorda, FL International Sports Sciences Association, Santa Barbara, CA KLC School of Design, London, England, UK Lansbridge University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada Rescue College, Kansas City, MO Sonoran Desert Institute, Scottsdale, AZ Southwest University, Kenner, LA Kozen
Interesting question. How much does a degree mill have to change to become accreditable by DETC? And having made the necessary changes, is it really the same institution that we may have known and loved in the past. I will be watching California Coast and Century in particular with interest.
Lansbridge University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada = 10 California Coast University, Santa Ana, CA = 9 Century University, Albuquerque, NM = 7
Well, I thought CCU had a good chance but then I became concerned that if they are accepting Kennedy-Western degrees as the undergraduate degree to get into graduate school then I'm afraid that they will be rejected. I'll also be watching Century with great interest. DETC has dissappointed and surprised some in the past. So I feel that I'm prepared.
I would be curious as to whether it was standard policy for CCU to accept KWU undergrad degrees, or if it happened in a few cases. Some RA schools have a policy in which a small percentage of grad students may be admitted with an unaccredited undergrad degree. The student is admitted on academic probation, then, if after 1-2 semesters the student proves he/she can do grad level work, the probation is lifted. I know at least one person who did this, was admitted to grad school, then earned a RA doctorate.
I don't know about it being standard procedure or not, but if they couldn't do the work, as you said of the RA schools, they would flunk out and be gone, or would be capable of doing the work, and all would be well.
Sorry, I didn't mean to be misleading. I just became concerned that they had accepted some K-W degrees but, didn't hear of any examples of that. I do know that RJT said that he applied there but I don't believe he said that he was accepted. I did hear of one incident where they apparently accepted a none college level foreign degree as an AA degree, IIRC. But the details were rather cloudy and so I might not have really understood the true facts. Of course, Russell's point is absolutely correct. Just because they accept a "questionable" degree on occasion it doesn't mean that there's a problem. It would only be a problem if they accepted them as a normal matter. Regarding an earlier statement in the thread. I believe it would be a problem for a school to accept anyone for any program under the assumption that if they can't handle the work load then they'll flunk out. That is a rather irresponsible and greedy attitude to take. I would be very surprised if DETC would find that kind of policy acceptable. That is apparently the way that K-W works. For example, I know of an incident where someone with zero college credits was apparently negotiating to get into a K-W Ph.D program. They were saying 6 classes being required, IIRC.
I agree with James. California Coast University = 10 I believe CCU will get their DETC Southwest University = 10 Century University = 5
I have come to learn more about CCU on this forum. Based on what I have read about their programs, including the now defunct doctoral programs, I would give CCU a 10. I feel they would get the DETC. Thank you.
I really believe they will, Cehi. They have been an important part of distance education for 30 years, and I wish them well in their efforts.
If they don't get accredited then I'm going to be very upset that I haven't bad-mouthed them nearly enough! Just kidding, I too wish CCU well but more from the point of view of the alumni.
Let's hope CCU gets accredited. It would shut people like me up. I still wonder how much a DETC accreditation is accepted in the real world.
Hi Mark, I am in a DETC University. I have not graduated yet, so I do not know how my degree will be accepted. DETC has recognition by CHEA and the U.S. Department of Education. The exams and term papers have been challenging. As an older student working full time, I have a chance to complete my education and I enjoy the experience. You can get more info on DETC at: www.detc.org Thanks, Mike
If you can give a brief synopsis on the other universities, I can venture a better guess. I am only familiar with CCU and Century.
Wow...it seems like CCU and Century has been on good status ever since they are both on the DETC initial Accreditation list.. LoL! So let's wish them all the best then..! So what about the rest in the list? It seems like nobody here will think that they will gain accrediatation in future, or just because they are not well-known by us? Kozen
