This is the official response to recent NEWS RELEASE from Honolulu University and clarification from Mr.Jeffrey Brunton.

We would like to make the following statement.

There is no single report in China that has suggested, indicated or conveyed the notion that Honolulu University has been shut down and the operation has thus ceased as result of the Hawaii state's litigation against it.

We would like to explicitly pronounce the so called misinterpretation of information(position held by HU) by China media in regard to the judgment utterly unfounded and untrue.

All China media report about Honolulu University's case are based upon hard facts and undeniable evidences.

We welcome competent Chinese speaker's rigorous scrutiny of all news reports about HU.If there is any report in China that has suggested, indicated or conveyed the notion of HU's shutdown as the outcome of the said judgment,we invite Honolulu University to initiate proper legal action against the culprit.

    I hope it clarifies

    On behalf of China Media

    NEWS RELEASE

    From: Arthur O. Yamada, Ph.D.

    Date: 7/16/03

    Subject: Litigation

We wish to advise that the litigation against Honolulu University by the State of Hawaii was not the cause of HU action. Shermont Business Academy, our former agent in Malaysia, had failed to include the disclosure by law that ¡°HU is not accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the USA Secretary of Education¡± on Shermont¡¯s website last year. Thus, the surface of litigation against Honolulu University ASH. Nonetheless, The State of Hawaii has settled the litigation against Honolulu University with judgment being passed and case closed.

In the light of this, several press media have highlighted this litigation issues through information obtained in English, and possibly through no fault of the media, that the translation maybe due to direct English to Chinese translation from the litigation update published and thereby creating the impression that HU is no longer in operation as a result of the judgment.

HU have always abided to the law and order of the country with full respect. This negative impact has caused undue worries to the concerned public; especially those who have placed their trust to take up an education with HU, China. At our end, we have received several enquiries with regards to the press report.

We hereby assure all concerned, especially our students that HU is still in operation and will strive to provide quality education through distance learning and all our representation office are specifically directed to observe code of conduct and ethics in terms of servicing the general public, especially our students.

    Honolulu University Clarification
It has been erroneously reported in some Chinese newspapers (and perhaps other media) that the recent settlement of the State of Hawaii’s lawsuit against Honolulu University has caused the university to shut down or cease operations. That is not factually true. The injunctive provisions of the stipulated judgment settling the case permit HU to continue operations so long as it complies with the proper disclosures and other requirements of Hawaii law.
