I received info packet recently and gasped at the new rates for DBA, EdD and EdS programs - $715.00 per credit hour !
So for a 60 hour program thats nearly $43,000 - not counting books and other fees and travel costs - easily 50K by the time one finishes.
Well Argosy is off my short list.

I just received that same packet.

Honestly though ... are there any other domestic options that are cheaper?

Fortunately I wouldn't have travel costs (Argosy has a campus which is walking distance from the school that I teach at...) but still ....

I think their tuition may be different depending on what site you go to. I know the DC campus was around $600/credit the last time I checked but the Sarasota campus was around $500/credit. I believe each campus charges a different rate which I find a little strange.

So you may have to travel more but you could get a cheaper tuition rate at a different campus however after the travel it may not be worth it.

Were you looking at just business degrees or something else?

At 715$/credit, the tuition is quite high. Nova Southeastern University charges about 475/credit for its doctoral programs. Ideally, a Nova doctoral program will cost about $30,000 but Nova doctoral programs are not usually completed in three years. They take between 3 and 7 years to complete. I also have to mention that the dropout rate, especially during the dissertation stage, is high.
I strongly recommend Nova doctoral programs because Nova has been around for a long time (DL time). Majority of Nova programs are campus-based programs that do not have any DL component. Some examples are Law, Medicine, Psychology, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Optometry, Nursing, and Physical Therapy. To South Floridians, Nova is just another B&M university. More than 80% of Nova students and alumni live in Florida.

The $715/CrHr was for the Atlanta site. I would feel confident in saying that instructor to student ratio is quite low.

    EllisZ:

You may want to look at Nova Southeastern University. They have an online Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership or Higher Education. The organizational leadership program has about 11 specializations while the Higher Education has 4.

Don't get confused by the website. I have been accepted into the program and what I tell you is true. You can verify this with an admissions counselor at the school. Their website is not always the most up to date.

You have two options. You can complete the program online completely or you can do a combination of online and meeting at one of their facilities. If you do the combination, you will take your specialization online and the core classes will be done at one of their sites. You go one weekend a month for three months. (per course and there are 5). Or if you take the program online, you complete everything online with no residency requirement.

However every student (except international students) have to complete a two day orientation session in FL. This is done several times a year and you have to complete it within 4 months of being enrolled. It is usually at Friday and Saturday session.

The cost of the program is $500/credit hour and they just changed this amount so it should not be going up for at least another year or so. If I can be of any more help, please let me know and I wish you well on your search.

There is a section that talks about Summer Instruction but you don't have to attend this, it is only an option.

This program is not entirely online yet but it is my understanding from the administration that it will be by Fall of 2003 or Spring 2004.

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln charges around 235/hour.
Their Ph.D. in education program is off campus (there might be an on-site defence) and on-line. I cannot understand how Argosy can charge such a high rate - actually I cannot fathom who would pay that much !!

Although the price is nice (Even $30k for Nova is a bit much IMHO) the Nebraska degree isn't entirely online as far as I can tell.

    This is from their web-site:

-Although C&I and TC offer an increasing number of online courses, not all doctoral coursework is available through distance technologies. (Click here for a searchable database of all C&I and TC online/distance graduate courses.)
-Not all areas of study can support distance students. (View our searchable database to see what courses we presently offer in your prosed area of study.)
-All doctoral students are recommended to spend at least one term on campus as fulltime students.

Thanks though .... it's good to have options.

    UNL Education PhD

    Hello,

I recently corresponded with the admissions staff at UNL, who told me that attendance in Lincoln is recommended but not required. I really suggest seriously looking into the UNL doctoral program. It's cheaper and you'll get more name recognition than many of the other options (Argosy, Capella...).

    Good luck!

As far as UNL goes, make sure you look under the correct department for their entire online program. This is not offered under the departments of Curriculum and Instruction or the Teachers College.

At this time the no residency program in only offered under the department of Educational Administration. This is where you can get a Ph.D. or Ed.D. without residency requirement.

    Hope this helps!!

    Thanks ...

Most schools have horrific web-pages when it comes to finding information. Even information as simple as "what degrees does this school offer" is often quite elusive.

This does help a lot. I was looking under the C&I and the Teachers College.

    UNL 2003-2004 Fee Schedule

Hope that works. A $65 surcharge for distance delivery, I am not certain whether that is added to in-state or out-of-state.
Either way, cheaper than nearly all others.

Actually, if I read that correctly we are looking at $457.25 / hr + a potential $65 per hour. That brings tuition up to between $27000 - $32000 and change not counting books & fees. So ... we are back in the lower-end of the same range as most of the others. :-(

Please correct me if I'm wrong. (I really hope I am.)

Looking at the information about U of Nebraska's tuition that was posted above, it appears that no RA doctoral degree costs less than 30K. Books, lodging, research, and travels will push it close to 40K.

    I believe UNL treates DL as In-state with the surcharge. In that case 169.75 + 65.00 = 234.75 x 56 hrs = 13146.00 + books + ??
If that is the case then there is a RA reputable program available.
Also there is a Lotus Notes fee per semester (small amount).

If they treat it as in-state then it's the best domestic deal around. I'll try and call them today (I'm busy so no guarantee that I'll get the time) and attempt to find out what rate will be.

Regarding the UNL DL PhD program: I just called and I was told that tuition is 250 per credit plus fees. With all fees included it would be 850 per course.

Far less expensive than most of the other options that are currently available.
