I may well be missing something in preferences or configuration, but is there any way to hide read messages in this board? A capability similiar to my newsreader, for example.

It is a tad tedious to scroll down through 40 messages to find the new one. Any suggestions welcomed.

    Regards,

It's a function of the media. It's also bothersome that if you log off without going through all the threads you're interested in then you lose your place.

This is one of the drawbacks of UBB unless Ted (the founder and original designer of UBB) has found a way to do this. It could be worth visiting the UBB forum as someone else may have made an add-on that allows for individual message read functions that would just show one message at a time and then keep track of exactly what you have read.

There are quite a few hacks for UBB, and we're also considering (in the slightly longer term) going to a different platform. VBulletin is a frequently mentioned board that is similar in function to UBB, but runs on a more robust database engine.

In the meantime, one of the changes we'll be making in the pretty near future is reversing the thread order so newest threads are at the *top* of the page instead of the bottom. I've been putting off doing that because we're also going to add some topic-based discussions to the current forum, now that we've got so many messages.

If anyone has comments, suggestions, etc. on particular software, setup of the board, or anything else that will help to make degreeinfo a better forum, I would be delighted to hear about it.

    Thanks!!

    Chip,

I have noticed that over time the responses may start to get off topic from the original post [the one in the title]. The result is that the first 15-20 posts are related to the title topic, and the remaining posts are related to an entirely different topic. Is there any [easy] way to break out a new thread when that happens?
