    Hello again..

I know the question about SCUPS has been asked in different forms may times before, but my friend is interested in applying to this school, and I wanted to get the "real deal" about them before he applies.

First of all, he came across them in an advertisement in the NASW Newspaper, sparking his intrest. I am aware that they are CA State registered, but have they applied for DETC or RA accrediation? Is anyone aware if their course requirements meet state licesing regulations in other states? I know that a degree is legal in the state of Oregon, but how much credibility does it add to the degree.

He was also considering NCU, but he really wants a PsyD, and NCU does not offer it.

    Any advice would be helpful.

Gina - Greetings from an MSW who transitioned into psychology. The question you've asked has been discussed at some length. You can access these threads by doing a search on my name as I typically contribute. My advice is for your friend to restrict his or her search to APA-approved programs of which there is currently only one resource: Fielding Institute. Obtaining a degree from a program that isn't APA-approved will generate lots of roadblocks. I halfway recall seeing something that New York restricts granting licensure in psychology to those who are APA trained. There is a lot of information in the old threads.

There seems to be an interesting trend emerging on this forum. I noticed that you are requesting information on whether SCUPS has applied for accreditation. I don't see that as information relevant to deciding the value of a school. It is either accredited or it is not. Spending time and money earning a degree that you are anticipating may become accredited does not seem to be a wise choice. There are many factors involved in the process, none of which you have any control over.

SCUPS is not accredited by an agency recognized by DoE or CHEA. There is no reason to think they are pursuing such accreditation. In fact, they estabished a school in another RA's jurisdiction in order to pursue accreditation.

I did a Google search and came up with many leads to SCUPS website, a link to University of Northern Washington, and the following link:

    http://www.south-edu.net/student/SCUPS/sample.doc

I did not find anyone with a SCUPS degree doing something significant or any other mention of SCUPS outside of the advertisemtns for their school.

I think that Oregon declared the SCUPS psychology PhD acceptable but did NOT extend approval to the PsyD.

    No idea why.
