    Hello,

I'm an Excelsior College student and live in Europe. I'm thinking about travelling to the US and taking some ECE exams(probably to New York since I also need to take a language test at the New York University). I need also to take several DANTES tests for my degree program. So my question: does somebody know if and where it is possible to take DANTES in New York for civilians?

    Thank you,

    Dennis Siemens

Which tests are not available to civillians, Mark?

    Best Regards,
    Bill

Thank you, Mark. Do you know whether this test centers offer DANTES on regular basis or only at certain dates?

You have to contact the individual test center. Usually it's by special arrangement. You tell them (SEVERAL weeks in advance) that you want to take a test. They book you for a time when they have room available, and order the materials for your test.

Rosie just tried to schedule a couple of DANTES exams.

http://www.getcollegecredit.com/Individual_States/massachusetts.htm is woefully out of date. Some of the phone numbers didn't answer; others were answered by people who had never heard of DANTES.

At one prominent institution, the person asked "DANTES? Can you spell that?" When Rosie did so, the person transferred her call to the School of Dentisty!

Today is the last day to register for the September DANTES date at Fitchburg State College, and the payment must be partly in cash, so right now Rosie is riding the commuter rail to Fitchburg.

Any State University of New York campus should do. Probably City University of New York campuses as well.

Be aware that you must pass security personnel to enter NYU or nearly any place in Manhattan. That was true years before 9/11 and is surely more so now. Make your arrangements early and make certain you know what you must do. Finding some compatriot at NYU and querying that person might be your best course as others are as apt to misinform as inform you.

Taking DANTES test in NYC-The Kings College

I had no success requesting SUNY or CUNY schools in the NY area administer a DANTES exam. They all said they either don't administer the exams or only administer them to their own students.

I ended up taking my DANTES exam at The Kings College which is in the lower level of the Empire State Building. Tests need to be scheduled a few weeks in advance as they are given only on certain days. The people at The Kings College were very helpful and the exam was given in a modern, comfortable, well-lit setting which next to their students' center so I had a place to perform a bit of last minute review before taking the exam. Given the central location of the Empire State Bldg transportation to and from the exam was easy. According to my notes, Tiffany Michaels at 212-659-7286 was the test coordinator and the general number for The Kings College was 212-659-7200.

I wonder if you'd have gotten a better response if you asked about *DSST* exams, rather than DANTES? The Web site above refers to them only as DSSTs ... you have to poke around quite a bit before you discover that those letters actually stand for "DANTES Subject Standardized Tests". It's likely that some of the college personnel don't know this.

    Just a thought.

(btw, this is my first post to this forum, although I've been lurking for more than a year now!)

(btw again, my user name was *supposed* to be "That Woman From Massachusetts", but apparently there's a limit on how many characters a user name can contain!)

Several of my co-workers have taken DANTES at Eastern Nazarene College, and all have commented on how painless the procedure was. Rosie may be better off going there, I do know there is plenty of free parking.

    DANTES vs DSST

I was very persistent in trying to find a school to administer a DANTES/DSST exam to me. It was clear to me that the people I eventually spoke to at the schools that turned me down knew what I was talking about.

Oh, I just figured that you were Marlo Thomas all grown up.

Welcome. We're a mostly likable bunch. If you've been reading for more than a year, you probably have the sense that we have our daily implosion, but you will also find valuable information (although less so as of late).
