Does anyone have experience taking classes from NCU(Prescott, Arizona)? I know they recently received their R/A and seem to have a very informative web site. I'm thinking of applying to their Masters Psychology program, but wanted some input on this school's general reputation and credibility.

Any advise or commets would be greatly apreciated.

I too will be interested in this thread because I have decided to enroll in their PhD program in a month or two. I'm looking at their PhD in business with a concentration in criminal justice.

I have to wait for an MA to be officially conferred upon me, sometime after August 14. :p

    NCU here I come!!! :D

Yes, I confess to saying that. I have vacillated back and forth. But every time I tried to permanently subdue the idea of pursuing a doctorate, the urge kept repeatedly popping up. I finally gave up and decided to ”give it a go.”

I don’t have the time to sit for ”hours and hours” in a classroom, as I have done for an AA, a BS and an MA. My time could better be spend reading, researching and doing assignments and, consequently, the online route looks very appealing.

I will begin the program with a good attitude. I just hope that I can someday say that I Phinnished it. ;)

I think that there are very few replies to this thread because NCU is such a new school. In fact, it only recently received regional accreditation. ;)

We will be charting uncharted territories. :)

To anyone who is considering NCU, I have this to say:

    BEWARE!!!
My wife was accepted into the Doctoral program in Health Psychology at NCU. She was intially told that her Master's Degree credits would be accepted, and that she would have to complete a bit over 60 credits at NCU. After a lengthly process that took several months, just prior to her beginning the program, they dropped the bomb on her! "You need to take 84 credits, not 60," she was told! They now said that they wouldn't accept her Master's, which was in a directly related field (Health Education with numerous psychology-related courses. She also has an undergraduate degree with a minor in psychology).

They were rather pompous and unwilling to negotiate at all, even though it was a different story in the beginning.

They also kept her application on hold until a few days after they got their RA Accreditation. Interesting. Hmmmmmmm!

More credits means more money! Could it be that they've become more money-oriented since their RA Accreditation?

She wondered, if they changed their minds about this, what would they change their minds about in the future: adding more courses, quibbling over the dissertation proposal, extending the program, etc...........

Needless to say, she was heart-broken by this, and is still looking for a DL Doctoral Program in Health Psychology.

    seeker,

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's misfortune. :(

You mentioned that NCU would not accept her MA. Where did she get her MA from? I'm curious to know if her MA is RA (just searching for a reason why they might not have accepted those credits).

    Dear Me Again,

Thanks for your words of consolation. My wife was pretty upset, to say the least. What's even more ridiculous is that she is a college teacher and even teaches some of the subjects for which they wouldn't give her credit. I believe it was a question of "more credits = more money!"

Both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees were traditionally earned (full residency) from a pretty well-konwn RA accredited school - Beaver College in Pennsylvania (the school recently changed its name to Arcadia University).

I recently started the PhD in BA program. I did not have any problems with my classes transferring. I graduated this year from Touro’s MBA program. Northcentral allowed the transferred of 30 credits which is stated as the maximum allowed for their PhDBA program.

A typical problem associated with the transfer of credits is the amount of time since the transferring graduate classes were taken. I believe most schools place a time limit on classes that can transfer.

I am not far enough into my first class to give a review but I have not seen any major problems.

    NCU

I can't believe more people have not heard of NCU, but then again it diddid just recieve its R/A. Even so, I don't think it has done a lot of marketing on the web. I certainly haven't seen it advertised anywhere and it is not listed in most guides and books. Granted, most editions of DL books out there seem to be from 2000 and earlier.

    NCU

I speculate that as a new school, NCU is trying to establish itself academically -- and is trying to establish deep roots that will last. One of the best ways to grow is to produce good graduates at all levels because they will reflect back upon the alma mater. As the school's reputation as a solid academic institute grows by word of mouth, then you will see more advertising.

At the moment, I think they are more concerned with establishing a base of solid graduates who will reflect favorably on the school. That can have long term impacts that will affect the school financially.

I'm thankful that NCU isn't marketed in the same fashion as the UOP.

FWIW, the NCU catalog was the quickest download I've ever had. If they're teaching that then I'll sign for the course.
