I will begin Excelsior's MLS program this Fall. Any advice from those who have gone before? Though I have a JD and about 39 graduate credits in education and business I'm somewhat apprehensive of the program's demands.

The first course I'm required to take is "Graduate Writing and Research" -----any feedback on that course?

    Thanks.

As someone who teaches MLS500, the best advice I can give you is to keep on schedule and don't let work pile up. I'd also recommend doing the assignments in fairly large chunks, especially the more straightforward compilation and formatting assignments. Do the computer-based assignments in section I all at once; then do section III whilst working up the op-ed piece for section II/assignment 6. Make sure you have a clear and managable topic for your research paper -- this isn't an MA thesis (yet) -- and allow plenty of time for feedback. Most (all?) of us teaching the class are also college teachers elsewhere, so submitting stuff during finals week will not get you rapid feedback.;)

I was a second reader for a recent graduate's thesis: the Excelsior MLS students are doing some really quite interesting research.

I've just noticed that my registered e-mail address is well out of date: if anyone wants to contact me about the Excelsior MLS program, I can be reached at jon DOT porter AT excelsior DOT edu

That being said, I only teach -- part time -- in the program, and any advice I might have to offer does not reflect nor is intended to replace the official position or policy of Excelsior College or the USNY. I just teach for what I think is a very good program.
