Does anybody have any experience with the Indiana State University PhD in Technology Management?

It seems to be a decent program on first glance, although the school is ranked Tier-4 in the National Universities ranking.

Is there anyone currently enrolled in the program that can provide an opinion?

    Kindest regards,

    Scott Henley, M.Eng.

I looked into this school - it is not aacsb accredited. This is not a program within the business department, but a different department and you should be warned up front it is not the same.

I realize it is not AACSB accredited, since it is not a business degree. In fact, it is offered by the Faculty of Technology.

I think AACSB is only relevant to MBA's, but I could be wrong.

The relavent professional accreditation would be ABET and they are not a member. I looked long and hard at the program, I even applied to the Construction managment option, but was not accepted.

It lloks like a good program, but it does have some limitations, being that it is in the engineering technology side, which is (unfortunately) looked down upon by many engineering programs. Lacking ABET accreditation does not help.

The construction management option is fairly unique, the only other option being UK, South Africa, or Australia research in Built Environment programmes.

The manufacturing and quality options can be done either through the University of Alabama in Huntsville - Industrial and Systems Engineering program (tried to provide a link, but they appear to be having server problems on Sunday afternoon), or Colorad State industrial engineering program.

I have no knowledge of the program you're interested in but I can speak to the institution since I earned my doctorate at ISU. IU and Purdue are the flagship Indiana state schools while Ball State and ISU are more regional in nature. I had a great experience and I have yet to have someone find fault with my APA-approved degree.

About the fourth tier issue; I think its important to consider what goes into those ratings. A lot of which, I suspect, has to do with things other than teaching. I had a professor at the University of Georgia who identified a taxonomy in higher education. He spoke of three tiers in which the student's learning needs are best met by first and third tier schools where the faculty is geared toward teaching. Faculty at second tier schools, like flagship state universities, he believed, are consumed with the burden of publication.

There is an old saying in psychology: the rat is never wrong. Taken literally, it means the lab rat runs the maze according to the contingencies it encounters. The same thing happens with faculty; if the maze is set up to shortchange grad students then so be it. While I was there, ISU faculty were promoted on the basis of teaching and community service as well as publication. Fourth tier? You do the math.

PS: In rereading the above I can see where it might be interpreted as defensive on my part but the intent is just to be informative. Everyone has an opinion and this is mine. Good luck in any event.
