I will be awarded a DL MEd TESOL soon (requirements met, waiting...) , and would like to continue with a PhD by Research (i.e. dissertation), however, the field that I am interested in is not TESOL, but completely different.

I would love to research and write about the "88 Temple Shingon Buddhist Pilgrimage in Japan". However, I am aware that this is
not only totally different to EdD in TESOL, but also and foremost a very specialized area.

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A UNIVERSITY THAT OFFERS A PHD BY RESEARCH FOR THIS TOPIC?

(And, living in an arrogant, ignorant and posh country, South Africa is out of question).

Any advise is most welcome, as I just can not locate any university that would allow me to embark on this research topic.

    cheers,
    adelheid:)

    Hi, Adelheid.

You have been around DL for a long time and probably know more about this than I do. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a specific program for you.

But here's an idea I had:

You seem to be talking about a British-syle Ph.D. by research. So contact Peter Harvey at the University of Sunderland.

    [email protected]

The UK Association for Buddhist Studies is based there, and Harvey is the contact person. (Besides that, he operates Sunderland's DL Buddhist studies masters, so he's plugged into DL.) Here's the UK Association's website:

    http://www.sunderland.ac.uk/~os0dwe/bsa.shtml

Here's a rather dated thing from their website, giving a partially annotated listing of British programs with some Buddhist content, including several doctoral programs by research, plus a number of other places that talk about possibilities for "postgraduate supervision", which may or may not translate into doctoral possibilities. Residency might be negotiable. At any rate, they are leads to follow.

And congratulations on completing your masters.

Monash University (AUS) appears to offer a research PhD in Japanese Studies with limited external places available.

I also would scan the universities that offer DL masters degrees in Japanese or Asian studies, and then present them with your research idea and determine if they'd sponsor an external doctoral degree. Such universities have the infrastructure for DL at the graduate level, so it stands to reason they'd at least entertain an external PhD if they have staff who could support your area of inquiry.

My website, though I haven't had the chance to update it recently, lists several master degree programs in Asian studies:
Distance Learning Arts and Sciences Page. This might be a good starting point.

    Best wishes,
    John

The #1 resource on the planet for your topic would be our own Tom Head. He knows more about non-Christian religions and distance learning than anyone else anywhere. He also knows more than his fair share concerning DL and programs in religion and theology.

You can contact him through his website at www.tomhead.net. I'm sure that he would be quite happy to help.
