I have had several people tell me Nova Southeastern has all these great programs with no residency requirement but I really can't find it. I am looking for a PhD program in Education or something related to that either education/psych/ etc. I looked at Nova Southeastern and all of the education programs are field based. Can anyone tell me if I am wrong in this?? I have had several people correct me and say that they have an Education program that is not field based. I can't find it. I'd like to know if this is true.

Wait until this fall (2003). It is my understanding that Northcentral University (NCU) will be adding a M.Ed. and an Ed.D. program. NCU is an accredited university.

Nova's doctoral progams are either full time residency or short residency and vary by department. The short residency can usually be done without attending the main campus. There are regional clusters for many programs in different parts of the country and attendance is typically a long weekend about every 3 months.

You will need to find the program you are interested in pursuing and look into the delivery methods offered.

    1. Visit the link below

    http://www.undergrad.nova.edu/coursewizard/index.cfm

    2. Click undergraduate catalog to view courses
    3. Click tuition, fees, etc for tuition info.

    I hope that helps.

    ArmyWife and Others:

From the website you are not going to get all of the answers you need. You will have to call the school and speak with an admissions counselor. I have just been accepted into their Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership program (yeah!!) and that is really the only program I can comment on.

I have spoken with the former director and creator of this program (Dr. Hollywood) many times and this is how the program works. All students working on a Doctoral degree through the School of Education must attend a one time two day orientation session in FL. This is mandatory and you cannot get out of it unless you are an international student. Other then that, everything else is online. This program can be completed online or at one of their sites or a combination of the two. But if a student chooses, it can be completed 100% online. You can call 1-800-986-3223, speak with a counselor and verify this.

The below paragraph came directly from their website.

Online: Courses are conducted through the Internet, allowing receive/submit course work, interact with participants, and contact professors using Internet technologies. The predominantly asynchronous nature of the method allows for participation in the program at times and places convenient to the student.

I hope this helps clear things up.

  12. Now the only question armywife has is:

Does she want to attend a school that accepts the likes of you :)

As noted in my post it can vary by department. In the SCIS graduate catalog it specifically refers to the cluster and institute sessions.

It does not really matter to me where Armywife decides to go. I was just trying to offer her the most up to date information. The reason I made the statement I did is because I was not speaking from an "outside" point of view just looking at the website. I was speaking from an "inside" point of view because I am a student at Nova now.

If you didn't understand my tone it is because I explained this before and explained that the website did not have the most up to date information. So I really didn't understand the point of continuing to ask the board for information you are not going to get unless you call the school.

Yuck. What are you the headmaster of this board or something? That is 2 threads I've read tonight where you were reprimanding others for asking a question you felt was unnecessary. If you think it's a stupid question then don't answer it. Someone crap in your cornflakes or is this just the way you are?

Did someone crap in yours, or is that just the way you are? Geez... It seems as though Duff has been trying to politely give you information about a program that might work for you, and you've just been ignoring what he's been trying to tell you. Then you have the nerve to attack him for no apparent reason. Are you always this appreciative when someone tries to help you? Have you considered actually calling or emailing people involved with these programs (such as advisors or deans), rather than just asking people here about them and then refusing to believe what they tell you? Come on, Duff even gave you the friggin 800 number to call a counselor and verify what he was saying!

Sorry to jump in like this, it just annoys me to no end when someone who is obviously trying to be genuinely helpful gets assaulted by the very person he (or she) was attempting to help. That's just plain unjust. I'd hate to see any members of this board stop offering information because of an experience like this, when there are a lot people who really would appreciate (and benefit from) the effort.

    Armywife:

Not at all. If you ask anyone in this board who has been here for a few years, hardly anyone knows me because I don't post that much. However, in the beginning I was just trying to offer you an option to your school search. I like to help people out but I normally don't make posts because sometimes the written language can be misinterpreted especially if you don't know the person.

If you have been reading in this forum long you will see this recently happened to another poster...Kristy7. I still feel bad for her. I don't understand why smart comments are made when someone is posting advice. I explained in an earlier thread about Nova's program and encouraged you and others to call to get the most up to date information. When you started a new thread about it, that is fine, I just wanted to re-state what I new personally about the school so you would have that option to you. Why, Airborne_Ranger felt the need to make his comment I don't know so I was just explaining the background behind my post.

It is not my intent to cause a middle school argument over who is the most popular kid. I merely wanted to offer you some options as you look for a doctoral degree. Speaking of which and you may already know, in the US the following are the main schools that offer 100% online programs that may relate to Education.

    Northcentral http://www.ncu.edu/

    Touro http://www.tourou.edu/

Nova (2 day Orientation in FL) http://www.fgse.nova.edu/fgshome/discover/dis_onlineprog.htm

    University of Nebraska-Lincoln
    http://edadone.unl.edu/Welcome.htm

All of the others will have some form of short residency, which I believe you stated earlier that you would not be able to do at the present time. Good luck in your studies and I hope you find the program that best fits your needs.

    Dear Duff:

First, thank you for the information regarding the doctoral program at NSU. It's always good to hear about the first-hand experiences of students or potential students in evaluating programs or schools.

Second, your observation regarding the lack of contextual cues in online communication (and the potential for misunderstanding) is accurate, and research published in Communications of the ACM supports your statement.

Third, thank you for your rational and reasonable response in the face of a statement that appeared (in my opinion) to be critical.

Fourth, congratulations on your acceptance at NSU as well as the start of a new educational journey!

  19. Duff,
