I am almost done completing my BSLA (in MAth/Natural sciences) over at Excelsior College.

I am wanting to be an teacher in Math & Sciences...

I am looking to find a DL school that I can (now) take a couple of Education classes, especially in the fundamentals of teaching etc..

Exclsior has a couple of links for classes for educations that specifies for Math teaching, and various others........but nothing in the science education areas.

Can anyone help me out here?

    Thnks

Do you know what the certification requirements are in your state?

    Education

Hi, NJ has specific education classes that alternate route teachers have to take. I would check this carefully before you send any checks out. Hille

If you want to teach in the public school system you will need to obtain teacher certification. Depending on where you live you could pursue several options. Many states will now hire you on without certification as long as you are taking the classes you need at the same time. Many school systems have a conditional licensure program where they will help you get certified and hire you at the same time. I would first check that out.

There are a lot of schools that will offer you education classes but only a few that will provide you with state certification. I would recommend that you get that book Bear's guide to education distance learning degrees. I am going through the Masters program at University of Phoenix because it leads to certification in the state of Arizona. Once you get certified in one state, then you can transfer that back to your own state. You have to have certification somewhere before you are eligible to apply to take their state exam usually. Often you will still have a few requirements to complete in your own state but it is still much easier if you already are licensed in one state.

The only programs I found that truly lead to state certification are Liberty University and University of Phoenix but more are cropping up. I think Regent University is starting one this summer that also leads to VA certification in special ed (and it is really hard to find one that leads to sped certification)..again you can find schools that will give you an education degree BUT the trick is finding one that leads to state certification.

The reason I chose UOP over Liberty was because Liberty required a lot of short visits to the campus for 1 to 2 weeks at a time. I know a lot of people rag on UOP because it cranks the degrees out BUT it is accredited and it does lead to teacher certification in Arizona. So it DOES get the job done and I have enjoyed my experience there a lot. It is easy. I'm not going to lie about that......it is too easy but it gets the job done. I am a stay at home mom with 3 children. I really couldn't do a masters degree program at the local college. UOP is easy and it serves its purpose for me. I already have job offers lined up with the school system here. UOP is well regarded by the state licensing office where I live in Alaska. A lot of people who live in Alaska have to get their teacher certification through DL because we have limited options in Alaska. So the state licensing board has them listed as one of the schools to go through. Works for me!

The other recommendation I have is Rio Saldo College. They will not award a masters but they will award certification. They are also out of Arizona. Originally I was going to go through them but I decided if I am going to take that many credits I want a masters to show for it.

    Good luck!

    I live in Florida.................

so, I have found out that I may be able to get a "temp" certficiation at first.

But within the 3 years of the temp is good for i need to get professional certified w/ DOE FL.

However, within that time...I was told i need to take some teaching classes anyways to get the professional cert.

So I have the rest of this year........and until summer of next.....i figure i would get a jump start on things.

Hello, Take a look at Fort Hayes Virtual College. There are some good education courses and the price is right. Hille

Hi - All of the advice about checking regulations and what is acceptable where is important to follow. Once you have the answers to those questions, you might want to check out Capella and Western Governors. Capella has a Master's in Education (www.capella.edu) - I think they may also offer certificate's. Western Governors has a variety of Master's and I believe you can take individual courses from them. (www.wgu.edu)

    Good luck!

You mentioned Instructional Education. I am seeing a lot of degrees in Online teaching and distance learning/educational technology etc. Is this the same type of thing?

What do you think is the usefulness of a degree like this? I am looking into Education degrees and seeing a lot of these.
