Columbia Southern University gained accreditation by the DETC as of January 10, 2001. For some reason, I thought I remembered reading a less than flattering remark about them in something written by Dr. Bear. Can't find it at the moment. I had previously warned two of my employees away from CSU due to their lack of legitimately recognized accreditation. With this change, my argument has lost its standing. After reviewing their information, the price is affordable and the programs, (although rather limited in quantity) appear comparable in requirements for completion with other DE programs. Does anyone have information out there to add? RK
Back when they were the University of Environmental Sciences, and back when they claimed accreditation from the dreadful and unrecognized Accrediting Commission International and APICS, I probably said some things about them being less than wonderful. But, as we have learned in the case of DETC and American Institute of Computer Science, DETC seems to look only at the current quality of the courses, and not the past baggage that a school carries.
Dear Randy, Please be careful with CSU. The Gold standard is Regional Accreditation not DETC. Most of thier courses may not be transferable to other college programs. IMO, better to stick with a college that is RA. A bit more expensive, but never questioned by anyone. Bob
Thanks John. After taking a second look at your 12th edition, that's probably what I recall. Nothing horid, just a statement of going concern since the school was not accredited at that time, bearing in mind the school only started in 1993.
RA versus DETC is certainly noted although my warning dealt more with transfer of credit than acceptance. I don't recall an acceptance problem (generally speaking) with DETC recognition when directly compared with lower tier RA schools. Thanks for your reply. RK
