Is this forum registered with search engines?

This new forum seems to have blown A.E.D. out of the water -- only one new post there today, and nothing from factwatcher for over 36 hours!

But -- is this new forum registered with any search engines? I searched on Google and Yahoo and it didn't come up. How do we make sure people can find it?

Many people accessed aed through deja.com, which has been acquired by Google and temporarily inactivated while they make changes. factwatcher also posted through deja because of the anonymity it provided.

Excellent question. The answer is no, it's not registered yet... in part because we've been waiting a bit to work any remaining bugs out of it, and in part because I (as resident web/technogeek) have been a little too busy to do it. But rest assured, we plan to both register it and do some search engine optimization so that it will rank high in the engines... and we've got several other ideas up our sleeves that, hopefully, will make degreeinfo.com an interesting and valuable resource for distance learning.

Any thoughts that you, or any of our other contributors have, would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Chip:

I have a pretty large email list of DL people. Let me know when you've "worked out the remaining bugs" and I'll be happy to distribute a message to them about the new forum.

Great! Give us another week or two, and I think we'll be ready.

    Thanks

Chip, thanks for the great new DL resource.
One question - is it possible to set up the web board so that a members 'read' messages don't show up the next time he/she visits the board? The only thing I dislike about this board is having to scroll through all the old messages to find the new ones on long threads.

I realize this may be a limitation of the board that cannot be overcome.

    Thanks for your hard work.

    Regards, Sean.

Thank *you*... it's regular contributors that make the board successful.

There are two options that *sort of* address your request, one yours and one ours.

You can, in the upper right corner, choose to view only topics posted within the last one, two, five days, for example.

And one of the options open to us is to change the board so that threads are shown in reverse order, with newest threads first. Given the traffic, I think that may be a good idea.

Sometime in the next several days, we'll post something with the proposed changes we want to make so we can get everyone's input before doing so... and I think that will be one of the changes.

Also, if the board continues to grow as it has, we will probably switch to a similar but faster BBS product that has a few extra features.

    Thanks for your input!

    Chip:

This has been a wonderful and productive alternative to a.e.d. It has supplanted that forum, actually exceeding it. I like the idea of reversing the posts (newest to oldest). I access the forum from several different computers, do I have go by memory as to which I've not yet read. (I really like the changing color folders, though, but with each computer having a different cookie planted....Oh, and the ordering of the folders to reflect how recently the last thread in each was added to is great. All in all, a highly manageable format. Thanks again.

This from a "new member" since this is only my third posting. I like the idea of having the latest postings in a thread come up on top so we don't have to scroll through all of the thread to see new stuff.

Do you have anything in the thinking or planning stage to handle the situation where the thread gets too far off the initial topic? For example, I started a thread concerning Google and AED that rapidly became a thread about factwatcher.

Keep up the good work - I really like the forum.

There are, in theory, moderator tools that allow threads to be moved, but we've not tried to use them yet. What we may start doing, when somebody has the time to do it, is simply separate a thread when it goes off topic and rename it. And we're probably going to split the board into multiple forums that are on specific topic areas, so that will help.

I've also come across a couple of very interesting articles that aren't (AFAIK) available on the 'Net... so if I can get permission from the authors, they'll eventually get posted somewhere on degreeinfo.com.

But the more suggestions, the merrier!

    Thanks.
